Both the House and Senate voted decisively to reverse Obama's decision to scuttle the legislation. Democrats in both cham- bers abandoned the pres- ident in large numbers despite warnings from Obama and top national security officials that flaws in the bill could put U.S. interests, troops, and intel- ligence personnel at risk. The Senate vote was 97- 1. The House vote a few hours later was 348-77. Lawmakers said their priority was the 9/11 vic- tims and their families, not Saudi Arabia. "The White House and the executive branch (are) far more interested in dip- lomatic considerations," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., a sponsor of the bill. "We're more inter- ested in the families and in justice." Speaking at a forum in Washington, CIA Direc- tor John Brennan said he was concerned about how Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, would interpret the bill. He said the Saudis provide significant amounts of in- formation to the U.S. to help foil extremist plots. POLITICS Michelle Obama says America 'needs an adult' in White House PHILADELPHIA Michelle Obama told supporters in Philadelphia on Wednes- day that candidates don't change once they become president and that Amer- ica "needs an adult in the White House." The first lady never men- tioned Republican presiden- tial nominee Donald Trump during the rally at LaSalle University. But there was no question that she was warn- ing voters that candidate Trump would be the same as President Trump. "The presidency doesn't change who you are, it re- veals who you are," she told the cheering crowd. She referred to several comments Trump made during and after Monday's debate, including his ap- parent acknowledgment that he's paid no taxes some years. Trump said that makes him "smart." "If a candidate is erratic and threatening, if a can- didate traffics in prejudice, fear and lies on the cam- paign trail, if a candidate thinks not paying taxes makes you smart, or that it's good business when people lose their homes; if a candidate regularly and flippantly makes cruel and insulting comments about women, about how we look, how we act — well, sadly, that's who that candidate really is," she said. "That is the kind of president they will be."
