HEATHERHOELSCHER—DAILYNEWS J.D. Platt and his K9athletes entertain the audience Thursday during the K9Kings Flying Dog Show at the 96th Tehama District Fair. ByJulieZeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF A field of 25 contestants was whittled down to just six Wednes- day evening in a fierce com- petition with 14 initially selected by the judges as potentials for their team of two. Each contestant sang for one minute with judges who were blindfolded and indicated their interest in coaching them by raising their blindfold. Three Red Bluff High School alumni, professional master of cer- emonies and singer Danny Muñoz, college student Kel- lie Rodriguez who is a mu- sical theater performance major at the University of Utah and local Red Bluff musician Chad Bushnell served as judges. Several times Rodriguez and Mu- ñoz lifted their masks at the exact same moment and 17-year-old Madelynne West of Palo Cedro had all the attention of all three before she even finished the first two words of At Last. West went on to select Rodriguez as her coach of choice, joining Emily Madrigal as members of Team Kellie. Red Bluff's Kathleen Stephens, who recently had twin girls at 31, chose to go with Mu- ñoz with Shelby Brooks, 20, making up the rest of Team Danny. Red Bluff's Ashtin Lopeman, 16, who was compared when sing- ing at the Red Bluff Round- Up in April to June Carter Cash, selected Bushnell as her coach and was joined by 13-year-old Krystlynn Bishop of Anderson for Team Chad. Contestants varied in experience from those who seemed to have no fear to those who were in their first big competition. Red Bluff's Ariel Dean Elliott was nervous, but deter- mined to compete in part because she took a bus to Dallas, Texas in January to compete for the tele- vised Voice competition and chickened out, leaving just 10 minutes before her scheduled audition. Throughout the evening, the judges encouraged con- testants to keep practicing and not give up on music if they weren't chosen. Fairboard Director and Contest Organizer Cheryl Weibling said she was pleased with the turnout with 26 people total regis- tered for the contest. The contest included people as young as six-year-old Frankie Ferreira of Red Bluff whose sisters Luci and Keira also performed, on up to contestants as old 61 years old. By Heather Hoelscher hhoelscher@redbluffdaily- news.com @DN_Heather on Twitter RED BLUFF High-flying dogs entertained audi- ences Thursday at the Te- hama District Fair during the K9 Kings Flying Dog Show. Dog trainer and event host, J.D. Platt, of Bend, Oregon, has been train- ing dogs and doing shows for 20 years. He travels the country doing shows each year with his 11 dogs, who are trained to do acrobatic tricks, frisbee catches, high-flying stunts and so much more. Along with jumping high, the dogs do flips, stretch and run around at Platt's command. The stands just in- side the fairground were pack for the first dog fly- ing show of the fair, with three shows going on each day of the fair. Platt trains his dogs us- ing consistency and repe- tition so the dogs can learn the tricks and the jumps on cue, he said. He uses enthusiasm and praise when his dogs learn the new tricks. Platt got the audience involved as the a few chil- dren in the audience got to throw frisbees high up in the air for the dogs to catch. Prizes were given out during the show.
