As a private business, we are on record as having invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in our city center. As a long time entrepreneur, I have actually invested and lost hundreds of thousands of dollars attempting to bring new business and entertainment venues to Downtown Fayetteville. No regrets. However, I, like many others, who optimistically invested in the prosperous economy of 2006/2007, were all blindsided by the tsunami of the 2008 recession. Financial institutions failed, shell-shocked banks refused to lend money, real-estate values plummeted almost as fast as the unemployment rate increased. Boom! We found ourselves right in the middle of a full-fl edged recession; scrambling to keep our businesses afl oat while inside traders, "99 weekers" and those on government handouts chilled out on the sidelines to wait it out. In the end, the businesses that survived are mostly half staffed with employees at reduced salaries with benefi ts reduced or eliminated. All of them forced to continually reinvent themselves and hoping economic relief comes sooner rather than later. That describes us. Up & Coming Weekly is this area's weekly community newspaper. Our commitment to quality and service has always been to the residents of Fayetteville, Fort Bragg and Cumberland County. We have never strayed far from our mission of showcasing the community. We have also never refused to assist, support or help businesses, institutions and organizations who also contribute positively to the quality of life of our community. Those who have a relationship with us know we are a company that helps those who help themselves. We are the community voice. Free, open, unbiased and non-political, our newspaper speaks for those who want and dare to be heard. Up & Coming Weekly is the constant conduit for current and relevant news, editorial, opinion and information.
