Coach Jake Daricek said the keys this week were the ability to view film of the opponent in preparation and several players stepping up. Freshman Hunter Landingham impressed on both sides of the ball, in addition to Kyle Wood and Henry McHale, who has been battling an injury. On defense Daricek said he liked what he saw from Kyle Wood and Al- len Garman, both of whom also con- tributed on offense. It didn't take long for the Bulldogs to put their stamp on the game, with quarterback Alex Russell taking it to the house on Los Molinos' first play from scrimmage. The Grizzlies would turn it over on downs at midfield and on the next play Russell would break free for another score. Landingham con- verted to put Los Molinos up 14-0 just minutes into the game. Right now. For a little while lon- ger. Probably. But I wouldn't mark down any- thing in perma- nent ink this 49ers season, and if I were Co- lin Kaepernick, I'd probably make sure I was extremely ready to start by late-October, if not sooner. In fact, if you trace the whole, weird 49ers QB picture back to Kelly's hiring last January, you might guess that Kelly had it sort of planned this way: 1. Go along with general man- ager Trent Baalke's wishes and start Gabbert in the rough early few weeks of the regular season, giving Gabbert the first shot to take command. So far: Two starts, 1-1 record, Gabbert has been ordinary at best, and the 49ers are averag- ing only 4.4 yards per play, sec- ond-to-last in the NFL. 2. Let it play out for a while, don't pull Gabbert too quickly, and make sure Baalke is rela- tively placated. Plus, giving Gabbert several more games (starting with a trip to Seattle this Sunday) means that Kaepernick will have more time to get fully healthy after his three winter surgeries pre- vented him from weight train- ing and left him well below his regular playing weight. So far: The blowback over Kaepernick's national anthem protest seems to have calmed down a bit, Kaepernick has been the backup for the first two games, and Kelly says he's slowly regaining weight. 3. By slow-playing it, Kelly has the option to switch to Kaepe- rnick possibly without Baalke's extreme objection, and maybe owner Jed York is already OK with the idea. Remember, Kaepernick's $14.5 million salary for 2017 is guaranteed only if he suffers a major injury, so there's motiva- tion for the 49ers to keep him on the sidelines. But there's also motivation for Kelly and the 49ers to get a chance to see what Kaepernick can do at some point this sea- son, and I think that side will win out. So, Gabbert will start in Seat- tle and, if he's still healthy, the next weekend at Levi's against Dallas, and he'll probably also NFL COMMENTARY Gabbertfor now, Kap maybe a er 5 or 6 games MIKE MCCARN — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The 49ers' Blaine Gabbert looks to pass under pressure from a Carolina defender on Sunday.
