Summer may be coming to its official end, but that doesn't mean the heat still isn't on, especially in a few cooking series airing this week. That's especially the case Sunday, Sept. 18, on Food Network, as host Tyler Florence heads into the triple-digit temperatures of Palm Springs, Calif., for an especially sizzling episode of "The Great Food Truck Race: The Family Face-Off." There under the blazing desert sun, contestants must turn themselves into human roadside attractions to draw customers to their trucks. Feel the burn. Fire is certainly in the equation on Cooking Channel's "Man Fire Food" on Tuesday, Sept. 20, as host Roger Mooking goes to Texas to help grill steaks on a burn barrel and then watch dessert being baked in a coal- covered cast-iron Dutch oven. Watching these innovative men and women as they prepare delicious meals in their cooking contraptions is always fascinating. On a cooler note on the Saturday, Sept. 24, edition of PBS' "Moveable Feast With Fine Cooking" (check local listings), host Pete Evans takes viewers to San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, where local chefs David Barzelay and Brandon Jew forage for seaweed and redwood bark and prepare a meal of steamed halibut and bone marrow and aged cheddar cheese with crudite, which is then served in a redwood grove. Venturing even further west is Travel Channel's "Secret Eats With Adam Richman" on Monday, Sept. 19, as the adventurous host and culinary thrillseeker ventures to Hong Kong to sample some perfectly grilled tomahawk steak. Make sure to take notes. The Friday, Sept. 23, episode of Food's "Burgers, Brews & 'Que" takes host Michael Symon to Traverse City, Mich., where he meets up with longtime summer resident Mario Batali and the two consume smoked Lake Michigan fish, the region's famous olive burgers and, of course, beer. Also on Friday, host Guy Fieri checks out the "Best of the West" in a so-titled episode of Food's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," as he hits up unpretentious eateries from the Southwest to the Rocky Mountains. As for competition series, tune it to Food on Wednesday, Sept. 21, for the tournament finale of "Camp Cutthroat 2: Alton's Revenge," in which two chefs are tasked with making their chili dogs in a leaky boat and then balancing on a log while preparing game dishes. At least clean-up should be easy. "Beat Bobby Flay" Thursday, Sept. 22, on Food, pits TV food stylist Jackie Rothong against Italian-born Matteo Boffo for the right to take on Flay in the final round, with Network chef Scott Conant and reality-show star Bethenny Frankel determining the winner. And a breakfast-in-bed-themed edition of Cooking's "Sugar Showdown" on Wednesday finds the baking tandems competing in a speedy elimination round while incorporating grapefruit as the mystery ingredient. One might say that's unimaginable.
