ByStephenWade TheAssociatedPress RIO DE JANEIRO MattStutzman was born with no arms — just stumps at the shoulders — but he says there's almost nothing he can't do. He holds a world record for the most accurate distance shot in archery, which includes able- bodied archers. He drives a car without mod- ifications — right foot on the steering wheel — plays basket- ball, and can write with both feet, both shoulders, and his mouth. He shaves and feeds himself with his feet, and his house in southeastern Iowa has no mod- ifications of any kind. "I tell my wife Amber there's only one thing I can't do," he said Wednesday. "I can't change dirty diapers." Stutzman — known widely as the "Armless Archer" — has gone from being a depressed, unemployed stay-at-home fa- ther in 2009, to being famous and well-off. He now boasts lu- crative sponsorship deals with British Petroleum, Nike and many others. "I now travel full time and work, and my wife is a stay-at- home mom," caring for their sons Carter, Cameron and Alex, he said. "I'm not saying I'm like LeBron- (James) rich, but I'm comfortable enough that I'm OK. It's not stressful anymore." He won a silver medal in the 2012 Paralympics in London, but was knocked out in Rio by one point on Wednesday in the quar- terfinals. "My whole goal for the games was to inspire people," Stutzman said. ERIC GAY — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Texas quarterback Shane Buechele (7) runs against UTEP during the first half Saturday in Austin, Texas. By Stephen Hawkins The Associated Press Three Big 12 teams were still un- defeated going into November last season and four other teams got into conference play before suffering their first losses. Only two weeks into this season, the Big 12 has just three teams with- out a loss. And those aren't even the top teams in the league's preseason media poll. Among the early losses are 14th- ranked Oklahoma's opener against the sixth-ranked Cougars in Hous- ton, the Oklahoma State officiating debacle against Central Michigan and TCU's double-overtime loss at home when Arkansas was the first SEC team to visit Fort Worth since 2003. Still undefeated are No. 11 Texas, surprisingly the league's highest- ranked team, West Virginia and No. 21 Baylor. Outside of the Longhorns' dou- ble-overtime win over Notre Dame, and West Virginia's opener against Missouri, the Big 12 has four losses against teams from other Power Five leagues (ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC). The Big 12 is the only one of those with a losing record in such games. "It has everything to do with the nature of who we're playing," West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said. "The schedules are changing. No- body is just playing three cupcakes — well, there are a few that are — but pretty much everybody's playing challenging games now." The Spartans are scheduled to host the Enterprise Hornets at Red Bluff High School today. GIRLS TENNIS Spartans continue winning ways, 6-1 By Andrew Baggarly Bay Area News Group SAN FRANCISCO It is a guiding principle of Bruce Bochy's mana- gerial philosophy: if it's not work- ing for awhile, stay the course. And if it's still not working, then change it up. Remember that offensive awak- ening over the weekend in Ari- zona? It was a temporary condi- tion at best, and a death rattle at worst. The San Francisco Giants returned to their comatose ways while getting swept at home by the San Diego Padres, and man- aged just four hits in a 3-1 loss Wednesday afternoon. Changes might be coming soon. Prior to the game, Bochy hinted strongly that he planned to turn center field and second base into platoons, with Denard Span yield- ing to Gorkys Hernandez and Joe Panik yielding to Kelby Tomlin- son against left-handed pitchers. Some more dramatic shuffling could happen soon. Madison Bumgarner had a solid if not dominant start, giv- ing up three runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He did not receive nearly enough run support to win the 100th game of his career. The Giants scored five runs over the three losses to the Padres while facing a trio of pitchers — Paul Clemens, Clayton Richard and Luis Perdomo — that will not ap- pear on Cy Young Award ballots.
