They arrested one suspect in Oklahoma and another in Cal- ifornia after comparing their DNA with semen from two men found on one of the victims, 13-year-old Doris Karen Derry- berry. She and 12-year-old Valerie Janice Lane, both of Olivehurst, California, were reported miss- ing by their mothers on Nov. 12, 1973, after they failed to return from a shopping mall in nearby Linda that the girls had visited the previous day. Just before 7 p.m. the manager at the mobile home park and one of the victims, Barbara Benson, 78, of Red Bluff received infor- mation that a female subject, identified as Lisa Darlene Cook, was in the grass area at the rear of the park acting strangely, ac- cording to a press release issued by the Tehama County Sheriff's Office Tuesday. Benson and her sister Sara Correia, 76, of Red Bluff ap- proached Cook and for unknown reasons Cook hit Benson. Benson suffered a swollen eye and several scratches and gouges, according to the release. Benson was later transported to the hospital to be treated for her injuries. ARREST Woman charged with battering two elderly women By Heather Hoelscher hhoelscher@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Heather on Twitter RED BLUFF A wildfire charred 290 acres of vegetation Tuesday in the Hog Lake area off of State Route 36 East, 10 miles northeast of Red Bluff. The fire, which began at 11:10 a.m., had been burning at a mod- erate rate of speed, said Kevin Col- burn, Tehama Glenn unit Cal Fire information officer. It was reported at 2:30 p.m. the fire was 100 percent contained. The cause is still under investiga- tion. There are five air tankers, 12 fire engines, six fire crews, two bulldozers, 2 helicopters and five water tenders with a total of 168 personnel on scene, Cal Fire re- ported. Cal Fire ground unit firefighters tried to make access to the fire but access was limited, Colburn said. Firefighters made good prog- ress on both flanks of the fire, Col- burn said. There were no struc- tures threatened and no injuries as a result of the fire. The land is managed by the Bu- reau of Land Management. The Willard fire, which started around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, con- tinues to burn off Willard Creek Road west of Susanville in Lassen County. Cal Fire reports as of Tuesday morning the fire was more than 2,500 acres and 15 percent con- tained. It was threatening 525 structures. Mandatory evacuations were in place for the Gold Run area and HiddenHillsDriveandtheCheney Creek drainage east of Devil's Cor- ral. Evacuation advisories were in place for residents of the Susan Hills areas south of Susanville. ResidentsofRiverBenchRoadand Bauer Road in Susanville were en- couraged to monitor fire activity very closely. The Bizz Johnson and Southside trails are closed. An evacuation center has been opened at the Community Church of Susanville, on Numa Road near the intersection of Cameron Way. Large animals can be evacuated to the Lassen County Fairground, 195 Russell Ave. in Susanville.
