RODEO Focus takes Bushnell to nationals By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor Chelsey Bushnell has something in common with one of her horses, Sugar Bear. Bushnell, a 16-year-old Red Bluff High School sophomore, stays calm and focused when the pressure, and stakes of a rodeo com- petition, are high. And so is Sugar Bear. She said she pictures a run in her head before she rides it in the arena. It's working. mance to make into the top four. rope fast that were in the top and they missed," Bushnell said. Riding the way she's After a short wait on her horse while her score was being tabulated, it was con- firmed. Bushnell earned second place and a trip to Wyoming. And when a competitor Federer sure came close to following Nadal out the door, though. The owner of a record 16 major tro- phies, and a quarterfi- nalist or better at 32 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments, the third- seeded Federer dropped the first two sets against 29th-seeded Julien Ben- neteau of France, then was two points away from losing six times, before coming all the way back Friday to pull out a 4-6, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 7-6 (6), 6-1 victory in the third round. ''Oh, my God, it was brutal,'' Federer said. ''The thing, when you're down two sets to love, is to stay calm, even though it's hard, because people are freaking out, people are worried for you. ... You don't have, obviously, many lives left out there. You just try to play tough and focus point for point. Sounds so boring, but it's the right thing to do out there.'' (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers are ask- ing a judge to decide if Santa Clara County can redirect $30 million originally earmarked for the team's new stadium for other uses. A Sacramento judge on Thursday set a court hearing in the case for July 3. The 49ers are expected to ask for a temporary restraining order freezing the use of the funds until the mat- ter is settled. The dispute arose after a county board responsible for allocat- ing redevelopment funds said the money should be used for more press- ing community needs. The 49ers argue the money is legally theirs because it was allotted by voters in 2010 to help build the $1.2 billion stadium. The city of Santa Clara, where the stadium is being built, agrees. She says she was born into riding, is coached by her parents and rides everyday to stay sharp. What's more, Bushnell said, is she never ends practice on a bad note. When Bushnell is com- peting, she transforms and is all business, Bushnell's mother, Donna, said. Bushnell also placed fifth in pole bending at the state finals, but because one of the top four riders cannot make the trip to Wyoming, Bushnell was bumped up to compete in that event at nationals as well. ——— Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 527- 2151, extension 111 or sports@redbluffdailynews. com.
