Now is when what the candidates say and do really counts. And now, incredibly, an already depressing campaign is getting worse every day. No matter who wins in November, we're going to end up with a president that half the country hates and the other half didn't really want to win. WehaveHillarythe Crooked still trying to lie her way out of her email crimes like a cheap lawyer. We have Trump the Un- qualified still talking in gib- berish about grabbing Iraq's oil, claiming he knows more about ISIS than the generals and trading air-kisses with Vladimir Putin. Thursday morning we even had Johnson the Pot Head flying his Libertarian Par- ty's campaign plane into a cliff on "Morning Joe" with his already famous "What is Aleppo?" response. So who's left to vote for — Jill Stein, the mad doctor of the Green Party? It's sad to say, but Trump, for all his many, many flaws, is still our best choice in an election year that has pro- duced the worst slate of can- didates in recent history. For both The Donald and The Hillary, one of whom will be the next president, this election is no longer about gaining voters for their candidacy. It's all about suppressing the other guy's voters. Whoever can get the other guy's supporters to stay home on Election Day wins. If Trump is going to win in the end, it might have less to do with what he says or does than what Citizens United and Judicial Watch do. The two conservative groups, which have used law- suits and Freedom of Infor- mation requests to get the state department to release Clinton's emails, have caused Hillary much more trou- ble than Trump or the main- stream media. There will be more emails coming because of Citizens United and Judicial Watch, plus whatever October sur- prises WikiLeaks and Julian Assange have coming. You have to applaud both groups for what they are do- ing. They are the greatest as- sets Trump has. Every time they force an email dump the media are forced to report on it and more Americans hear about Hillary's sloppy email habits and how crooked she is. The email dumps might very well suppress the voting for Hillary, which, let's face it, is the only way Trump can win. If you're looking for a good reason to vote for Trump, here's one — unlike Barack Obama, who dislikes Amer- ica and blames it for every ill known to mankind, Trump loves America. Here's another: Unlike Hillary, Trump is not a life- long liar. And here's a third: We know what we'll get with President Hillary — four more years of sleazy Clinton Fam- ily values, four more years of Obama progressivism and two generations of liberal Supreme Court decisions. With President Trump — who has no ideology but nar- cissism — at least there's the hope that he'll convert to a conservative and hire peo- ple who'll reverse, repeal and repair the damage done by eight years of Obama. It read "Happy La- bor Day" and was subtitled "What- ever you do… We salute you!" The ad was spon- sored by 17 local merchants. Was it a salute to the armed forces, our men and women overseas or our local police? No, the ad stipulated that the mer- chants were "saluting the men and women whose hard work keeps our nation moving along in the right direction." It did not indicate what the "right direc- tion" was, but, as the merchants are obviously a part of the work force, they were, in effect, salut- ing themselves. Perhaps workers should be gratified their efforts are being recognized as "embodying the ro- bust work ethic that makes us so proud to be Americans." I did not know that. This is news to me. I think I have personally al- ways had a good work ethic, but didn't for a minute con- sider it would further my sta- tus and make me proud to be an American. However, I ac- cept the accolade and promise to keep working, to abide by our great country's guidelines and will continue to stand for our national anthem. ••• Did you know that Germany has drafted legislation that would make it an offense for mothers not to tell their hus- bands or partners if their child was fathered by another man? I don't know how it would be de- scribed in German, but in Eng- lish it is called "The milkman's kids law." I kid you not. ••• A cartoon shows a large of- fice with many empty desks but only one occupied by a lonely worker. The caption, being read to the worker by his boss: "Your co-workers in China and India asked me wish you a happy Labor Day." ••• We expect the following ad to run in the SF Chron very soon: "Wanted: Reliable closer. Gen- erous salary and benefits. Apply S.F. Giants c/o AT & T Park. ••• A recent police log indicated that a woman at Rio Vista Mo- bile Estates reported that some- one claiming to be Donald Trump attempted to break into her residence. A deputy checked but found no one fitting the de- scription of the candidate. A suspect, if found sporting a blond comb-over, would surely have prompted further investiga- tion, but none such was located. ••• And speaking of candidates, do you ever wonder who ties the shoes for one of them? ••• A filler item on a page in The New Yorker captioned "Events we don't Plan on Attending," from the Corvallis, Oregon Ga- zette-Times, "At the end of the month, the Pacific Northwest Jugglers will be celebrating by throwing up at the Northwest Juggling Convention March 30 to April 1." ••• Whereas the expression "Highway to Hell" is a famil- iar expression, its counterpart is described as "A stairway to Heaven," which suggests that one venue has decidedly more traffic than the other. ••• Apparently one of the pres- idential parties believes in cli- mate change, whereas the other discredits the concept as some- thing that has occurred over the passage of time and if indeed happening now, there is noth- ing one can do to mitigate the damage. However, despite reli- gious protestations to the con- trary, the earth is not thousands but millions of years old, and as such demands its periods be de- scribed as geological epochs. As reported in TIME, the earth was formed 4.5 billion years ago. The Paleozoic era oc- curred 542 million years ago with modest life forms that pro- gressed through other epochs such as Mesozoic and Cenozoic until the present which is titled the Holocene period and began a scant 12,000 years ago. Dur- ing previous epochs, life forms experienced mass extinctions… dinosaurs, for example. But on the 28th of August, some scientist in the Interna- tional Union of Geological Sci- ences in South Africa pro- claimed that human activity has grown so powerful that it is forcing a change of the geologi- cal calendar: Earth has entered a new epoch, called the Anthro- pocene, defined by humans and our effect on the planet. Our previous era, the Holocene, pro- vided a rather stable and rel- atively warm climate that al- lowed humans to develop ev- erything from agriculture to atomic power. But that suc- cess made the planet we live on experience widespread de- forestation, overfishing of the oceans, the extinction of count- less species and the altering of the planet's climate through the emission of greenhouse gases, or so sources say. Therefore it appears that hu- mans brought an end to the Ho- locene era quickly, and no other epoch lasted fewer than several million years. This scary article concludes with the statement that "If we are powerful enough to cause these problems, we might be able to solve them." ••• When writers sum up an article, they often use the phrase, "That said…" However, the phrase should be "That written…" I recently pointed this out to a fledgling colum- nist, but received no thanks for saving him from future em- barrassment over improper use of the phrase. And speaking of colum- nists, have you noticed a new group of them with their noses pressed to the door of the Daily News awaiting encouragement from on high that they might continue their quest for modest unpaid notoriety? ••• Will someone explain to me again why, when we observe an ambulance parked in front of, say, Villa Columba on Main Street, it is always accompanied by a fire truck? ••• Phil and Dave played golf one afternoon, but Phil was under strict instructions from his wife to be back by 4 o'clock because she wanted him to take her shop- ping. But 4 o'clock passed, then 5 and finally at 6 Phil showed up. "Where on earth have you been," his wife screamed. "Honey", said Phil, "a terri- ble thing happened today. We made it to the first green, when Dave suddenly dropped dead of a heart attack." The wife felt guilty. "That's awful," she said. "You're telling me," said Phil. "The rest of the round it was hit the ball, drag Dave, hit the ball, drag Dave…" Robert Minch is a lifelong resident of Red Bluff, former columnist for the Corning Daily Observer and Meat Industry magazine and author of the "The Knocking Pen."
