ByCamInman BayAreaNewsGroup SANTA CLARA Running back Carlos Hyde is fully cleared from the league's post-concussion protocol, having stripped off his no-contact jersey for Thursday's San Francisco 49ers practice. Hyde's health is pivotal to Monday's opening-night matchup pitting him against Los Angeles Rams counterpart Todd Gurley — and opposing de- fense's sturdy front lines. "Both teams are going to play to their strengths, and both have two outstanding backs in Gur- ley and Hyde," 49ers coach Chip Kelly said. Hyde is having déjà vu. A year ago, the 49ers opened on Mon- day night against a more cele- brated running back in Adrian Peterson. Hyde responded with 168 yards and two touchdowns in the 20-3 win over the Min- nesota Vikings and Peterson (10 carries, 31 yards). "Just like last year, going into the Monday night game, all the talk was about Adrian Peter- son," Hyde said. "We've just got to go out and do our job." As reliant as both offenses may be on their marquee rush- ers, Kelly cautioned not to over- look the Rams receiving threats Tavon Austin and Kenny Britt. "You still have to defend every- thing," Kelly added. "But we know we're going to get a steady dose of Todd." Gurley won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors last year with 1,106 rushing yards, third best in the league. Not bad for someone whose college ca- reer at Georgia ended with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. By Chip Thompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter CORNING Coming of a 51-7 win over the Las Plumas Thunder- birds in week 2 on the road, the Corning Cardinals football team returns home tonight, Sept. 9, to face its neighbor and rival, the Or- land Trojans. After dropping the season opener 49-21 to the Enterprise Hornets, the Cardinals bounced back against the Thunderbirds — a good team for doing so, having finished 1-9 in 2015 and losing to Marysville in the opener 41-7. This week won't be so easy for the Cardinals. The Trojans went 11-2 in 2015 and advanced as the No. 2 seed to the Division 3 cham- pionship game, which they lost to the No. 4 seed Sutter 38-7. The Trojans, like the Cardinals, are 1-1 on the season after beating Bear River 23-18 at home in week 1 and falling to Anderson 6-0 at home in week 2. In recent years the Trojans have owned the rivalry, beating the Cardinals 49-0 last year, 21-7 in 2014, 27-13 in 2013 and 28-0 in 2012. Cardinals quarterback Devin Wunsch was 3-5 for 72 yards through the air and rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown last week. Against the stout Hornets squad he was 11-22 and 161 yards passing with a touchdown and in- terception. Running back Nolan Peterson has 113 yards on the season and is averaging more than 8 yards a carry. Both will have to step up to get past the Trojans. Kickoff is sched- uled for 7:30 p.m. Spartans vs. Foothill RED BLUFF The Red Bluff Spar- tans will host the 2-0 Foothill Cougars tonight, still searching for their first win after coming up short in a strong showing in week 2 against Shasta. The Cougars were 7-5 in 2015 but just 3-3 in league play. As the No. 5 seed they advanced to the Division 2 semifinals, where they lost to the Pleasant Valley Vi- kings, who would go on to take the championship, 56-14. The Cougars opened the sea- son with a 23-17 win over the West Valley Eagles in Cottonwood and beat the Shasta Springs Cougars in week 2 46-33. The Spartans will have to find a way to stop quarterback Trent Banner, who was 14-34 for 238 yards and 6 touchdowns through the air and ran for 25 yards and a rushing touchdown in week 2. But the Spartans have shown some offensive firepower of their own. Quarterback Wes Claw- son has 468 passing yards and 5 touchdowns through just 2 weeks; Cameron Ortega had 269 all pur- pose yards against Shasta, in- cluding 158 on kickoff returns; receiver Marshall Brose has 206 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns on the season and receiver Conner McKenzie has 136 receiving yards on the season. The Cougars beat the Spartans in 2015 in Palo Cedro, 35-18. To- night the Spartans will look to re- turn the favor on their home turf. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Bulldogs vs. Big Valley LOS MOLINOS The Los Molinos Bulldogs started off the season with a big win at home over the FOOTBALL CardinalstofacerivalOrland Red Bluff Spartans to host strong Foothill squad with 2-0 record Special to the DN ANDERSON In a northern di- vision meet, Anderson hosted Mercy, Oroville and Durham at the Anderson High School pool on Wednesday. Bring it on say the Oakland Raiders as they kick off their season of re- newed hope Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. "I think as a competitor, this is the kind of game you live for," Raiders cornerback David Amer- son said. "As a secondary, if you want to test yourself and see how good you are right now and how good you can be, this is the per- fect game to go out there and just compete." Brees has had a career's worth of success against the Raiders, going 8-2 and winning seven straight against Oakland.
