Ontheair minutestoplayinthefirst. Fumbles and more than a half dozen penal- ties repeatedly pinned the Wolves deep in their own territory. A pair of fake punts from the Spartans, with Wes Clawson throwing to Marshal Brose and Conner McKenzie, movedtheballto the Wolves 5 yard line, but Red Bluff couldn't capital- ize and turned the ball over after failing to convert on fourth and goal from the 3. The Wolves running game started clicking and they stopped killing drives with penalties to gener- ate another score. The ex- tra point was missed, but the Spartans got flagged for roughing the kicker and theWolvesmadethe2-point conversion to make it 15-7 with 4 minutes left in the half. The Wolves would drive thefieldagain,buttheSpar- tansdefensemountedagoal line stand to take over on downs at their own 2 to fin- ish out the half. The Spartans special teams stepped up in the second half, starting with the opening kickoff, which Cameron Ortega returned to the Wolves 10 yard line. The Spartans would settle foraHagenfieldgoaltopull withinatouchdownat15-10 with 11:07 left in the third. The Wolves responded with a 40-yard touchdown run from Conner Coughren to go up 22-10 with 10:16 left in the third. Just 45 seconds later, the Spartans answered with a 70-yard pass from Clawson to Brose for a score and Red Bluff was back within strik- ing distance at 22-17. The Spartans held and Ortega took the ensu- ing punt all the way to the Wolves 2 yard line, where Pearce would plunge in for the score to put Red Bluff up 23-22 with 7:44 left in the third. The lead would be short- lived,asKyaleMuckelwould break open a 62-yard touch- down run on the next drive. With the conversion, the Wolves went back on top 30-23. On the next possession Brose would get around the corner for 40 yards to the Wolves 4 yard line, but the Spartansstalledandturned it over on downs at the 10. The Wolves scored again to go up 38-23 on a 63- yard Muckel reception, but a Spartans fake punt goes ClawsontoBrosetoputRed Bluff in the red zone again. No dice. The Wolves would take over at their own 29 and score on a 20-yard Vin- cent Smith carry to go up 45-23. The final Red Bluff high- light was a 65-yard Ortega score to pull to 45-30 with 9:43 left to play. After a 20-yard Muckel score frustration got the betterofoneoftheSpartans players, who was ejected for reportedly throwing a punch at an opponent. In a freak play, a fum- bled snap on a Wolves punt turned into a big gain to the Spartans 15. Smith took it in for the final score and Shasta was up 59-30 with just less than 3 minutes to go. Rahtavian Matthews picked off Clawson to seal the Shasta win at 59-30. The Spartans (0-2 over- all) are scheduled to host the Foothill Cougars (2-0 overall), who beat Spanish Springs 40-33 Friday. JV Spartans lost 31-19 to Shasta. Spartans FROM PAGE 1 safely. With some credibility, the Giants could bemoan hard outs and a shortage of luck for some of their lean production while going 16- 31 since the All-Star break. Not anymore. Not when the bat is being knocked out of their hands. "We didn't make very good contact all day," Bo- chy said. "There weren't many balls barreled up. We need somebody to get hot, two or three of your core guys to get it go- ing. That's missing right now." Giants left-hander Matt Moore appeared to pound the zone in the first two in- nings but abruptly lost the ability to throw a strike in the second inning, and when that happens here, it's like losing your brakes while descending on the upper corniche. Moore walked Cris- thian Adames to start the third, then issued a four- pitch walk to Bettis as the pitcher was trying to sac- rifice. Raimel Tapia fol- lowed with a line drive that shortstop Brandon Craw- ford tried to snare with a backhand attempt an inch or two off the ground. The ball uncharacteristically deflected off Crawford's glove and into left field for a single that loaded the bases. DJ LeMahieu hit a sacri- fice fly that also advanced both trail runners, and the Giants made the easy deci- sion to issue an intentional walk to their personal tor- mentor Nolan Arenado, who already has 21 RBIs against them this season. It was just Arenado's eighth intentional walk of the season. And if that seemed low, Gonzalez pro- vided a counterpoint. He connected with a shot into the Rockies bullpen. "There's no excuse for that third inning," said Moore, whose only other start at Coors Field came in 2013 with Tampa Bay. "I had plenty of stuff to get the job done." Moore did not sur- vive the third inning as he gave up a home run to Nick Hundley, issued an- other walk and threw a wild pitch. At least Matt Cain made his fourth career relief ap- pearance a successful one, tossing 2 1/3 scoreless in- nings. And Left-hander Ty Blach, who hails from sub- urban Denver, had a mem- orable major league debut while holding the Rockies to a hit in three scoreless innings. It was like finding the prize in a box of Cracker Jacks that you've fished out of the canal. But it was something, and it pre- served a bullpen that used nine relievers in Sunday's 13-inning loss at Wrigley Field. It was more valuable than that for Blach, a left- handed rookie whose as- sistant coach at Regis Je- suit High School was none other than Rockies man- ager Walt Weiss. Giants FROM PAGE 1 and is a speed burner who can also help on special teams as a gunner and re- turner. Holmes is another good special teams player and can create size mis- matches, so that's helps his role as the No. 4. Coo- per is coming off the Raid- ers first 1,000-yard season since 2005 (he had 1,079) and Crabtree wasn't far be- hind (922). TIGHTENDS(3) Lee Smith, Clive Walford, Mychal Ri- vera. ANALYSIS Smith is tech- nically the starter, but Walford is the top passing threat. The Raiders have reportedly made Rivera available in a trade a cou- ple times but he remains as the No. 3. OFFENSIVE LINE (9) LT Donald Penn, LG Kelechi Osemele, C Rodney Hud- son, RG Gabe Jackson, RT Menelik Watson, T Austin Howard, G/C Jon Feliciano, T Matt McCants, G Vadal Alexander. Analysis: The group has been great in pass blocking, not as great yet in the run- ning game. Howard, who rolled his ankle in the fi- nal exhibition game, will be the swing tackle. Felici- ano backs up all three inte- rior positions. DEFENSIVE LINE (8) DE Khalil Mack, NT Justin Ellis, DT Jihad Ward, DL Denico Autry, DT Dan Wil- liams, DT Darius Latham, DT Stacy McGee. ANALYSIS The fourth starterontheline, withMa- rio Edwards Jr.'s placement on injured reserve Monday will likely be either Wil- liams or Autry. Williams could overtake Ellis at the nose anyway. This group will rotate heavily, except for the All-Pro Mack. LINEBACKERS (6) Bruce Irvin, Malcolm Smith, Ben Heeney, Cory James, Shi- lique Calhoun, Daren Bates. ANALYSIS Irvin will al- most exclusively be an edge rusher, backed up by Cal- houn. James could have a chance to take some of Hee- ney's snaps. Bates is a spe- cial teams ace and unlikely to see the field on defense. CORNERBACKS (6) Sean Smith, David Amerson, DJ Hayden, TJ Carrie, Dexter McDonald, Antonio Ham- ilton. ANALYSIS Hayden, a 2013 first-round pick, moves in- side to the slot corner spot behind a strong starting duo of Smith and Amerson. Carrie adds versatility. He can play outside, inside or safety.
