The former "30 Rock" writer and "Community" co-star wears many hats including actor, writer and executive producer on the FX series that premieres with two episodes Tues- day, Sept. 6. He draws his other career as a rap artist — under the name Childish Gambino — into the saga of promising rapper Alfred (played by Brian Tyree Henry), who's being guided by his man- ager cousin Earn (Glover). Though the show is billed as a comedy, it can and does turn quickly toward dramatic and even vio- lent content, and Glover doesn't mind keeping viewers on their toes. "There really isn't a lim- it, I feel, to how abstract you can get as long as you believe it," he rea- sons. "There has to be some sort of grounded nature to something so people don't start be- ing like, 'I don't believe this,' and then they turn the channel. if you have something that is ground- ed on some level, you can go anywhere. People want to go there with you if you do, but you just have to have it so people are like, 'OK. They are guided by their own rules every step of the way."' Despite his own back- ground in music, Glover determined early in de- veloping "Atlanta" that he didn't want to play the rap artist "because that would be weird. I wouldn't have enjoyed that. It's possible to do that, but then it actually makes it harder for me to do (the show). It just clouds a lot of things. I think it just wouldn't be fun as much. "If David Bowie made a show about him being a rock star, you could defi- nitely watch it ... but then there's some times you'd be, like, 'Is this dude play- ing me a little bit? Like, what's going on?' There's a level of magic realism and suspended disbe- lief that you need for all genres, and it's important to me as an artist to keep those intact." Glover prides himself on using many Atlanta-ar- ea actors in the 10-epi- sode first season that was filmed on location. Co-star Henry also was raised there, and he notes, "There are different worlds in Atlanta. The absurdity for one person is the reali- ty for another, and we just take it as it is. And I think that's what's so special about that city, that it is always constantly growing and changing." Donald Glover stars in "Atlanta," premiering Tuesday on FX.
