Box 220 Red Bluff, CA 96080 The best and worst of man That comes with little surprise as this community seems to always do what it needs to in order to support those willing to sacrifice their lives to protect us. My wife, Laura, was par- ticularly touched. Her brother is a police officer back in our native state of Michigan and cops' well- being is always on her mind. Laura works at one of A few weeks ago I wrote a story about the commu- nity's efforts to rename a stretch of Interstate 5 after Red Bluff police officer David Mobilio, who was mur- dered 10 years ago while on duty. It turned out to be one of the most "liked" stories the Daily News has ever posted on its Facebook account. Tehama County's largest employers and with all those bodies (and wallets), she thought there would be ample opportunity to raise some of the $5,000 in pri- vate funds needed for the highway signs. She set up a donation jar in her break room, standard practice at her workplace, and waited for the dona- tions to roll in. of the first night the jar already had $30 in it. By her last break Rich Greene Laura was sick to her stomach that night when she came home. By the time she went home it was empty. Yup, it seemed some heartless per- son took every dol- lar and penny out of that jar. She thought she was doing something nice for the community and in return got a crummy life lesson about how sometimes you can't even trust those who work next to you. next day when she got to work and the management team swiftly came up with a plan to prevent such thiev- ery in the future. One of the managers even personally donated back the missing money. Laura felt a lot better the Throughout the day her colleagues came up to her and told her how disgusted they were when they heard about what had happened. Many of those that had donated the day before told her they were going to redo- nate to the fund. The jar went back up with a secure locking system along with my story and other information about the fund. Soon enough money was pouring back in. There's creeps that walk among us. From those who would steal from donation jars to even sicker freaks who would kill a cop. Unfortunately their evil deeds have a way of over- shadowing the majority within a community that always finds a way to rally together. It can be easy to forget we outnumber them, but it's something we can't afford to do. signs finally go up, I'm going to drive past them and not think of some heinous act, but the good community that strives to bind together. Border crossing Editor: With Obama's vote buying decision to end deporting the 800,000 Hispan- ics, under age 30. illegally here, plus the Supreme Court decision to end the Arizona laws that require proof of cit- izenship for illegal border crossers, the singular option available is to totally seal the border against criminal border crossing without a legal visa. It is Your Turn worth the added cost to triple the num- ber of Federal Border Police and fund the high technology devices needed to seal our border from illegal crossing. . Illegal border crossing is not a vic- timless crime. Taxpayers must bear the $202,000 burden of K through 12 education plus Medicare to age 18 for every child born in the US to an ille- gal. That is $10,000 per year for K through 12 education and $4,000 yearly from birth to age 18 for Medic- aid. If the child of an illegal enters col- lege, add another $7,000 yearly for the average five years to obtain a 4 year degree. That is the subsidized taxpay- er cost for a public college education. The visa program for college edu- cated global citizens to enter the US for job openings should be expanded, since the program costs taxpayers nothing in welfare subsidies. The country of origin has already fully educated the engineering and science graduates seeking visas for highly skilled jobs that benefit America. Time to clean up the Obamacare mess Commentary Americans love their free- dom, so no matter how the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) rules on the Democratic Party's Darling, viz a viz, Obamacare, one thing is for sure: Obamacare's days are numbered, should, come November, voters decide to send a president to office who wears big boy pants and is qualified to clean up the mess Democrats have made of healthcare reform. Obama was against the vexing mandate found in Oba- macare that forces everyone to purchase health insurance before he was for it. In 2008, then-candidate Obama said healthcare reform should be devoid a mandate. "If a man- date was the solution" Obama stated, "we can try that to solve homelessness by man- dating everybody to buy a house." Brilliant. It's too bad he didn't hold to that thought after he became president. I'll bet Republicans would supported certain have who largely loathed the bill then, and still do. Liberals hoped over time we'd warm up to this infringe- ment of our freedom, but recent polls show quite the opposite is true. rated in recent years. Others suggest the decision will be based on partisan political views rather than the law. A June 20, 2012 AP-GfK Poll found only a third of Americans support Oba- macare, 47 percent oppose it, and only 21 percent of Inde- pendents polled favor it. Back in February, a Gallup poll posed a question as to the constitutionality of Oba- macare. Of those polled, 94 percent of Republicans and 70 percent of Independents said they thought the bill is uncon- stitutional. A stunning 56 percent of Democrats sided with those Republicans and Indepen- dents, but inexplicably 71 percent of those same Democ- rats admitted they are pleased of its passing, despite the leg- islation's assumed unconstitu- tionality. aspects of the bill had they not been excluded from the one-sided discussion Democ- rats dubbed as a "debate." The next thing we knew, the 2700- page pile of constrictive and nonsensical garbage was shoved down the throats of freedom-loving Americans Mark my words: if Obamacare is defeat- ed, liberals will demonize certain jus- tices rather than acknowledge their opinion was based on the case's merits. That's just how they roll. Their leader is no different. Presi- dent Obama shows about as much respect for the SCOTUS as he does the Constitution. Obama's dysfunction- al administration has shown us by its actions that the court and the Constitution are nui- sances that stand in the way of getting his way. SCOTUS justices calling them an "unelected group of people" and branding them "judicial activists" should aspects of Obamacare be over- turned. Normally, only punks make cheap shots. Susan Brown As I write, the countdown to the announcement of the Supreme Court's decision is hours away. Demonization of the SCOTUS justices has already begun.
