MARTINMEISSNER—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS A Brazilian police official told The Associated Press that Lochte fabricated a story about being robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro. ByMauricioSavarese, Peter Prengaman and Luis Andres Henao TheAssociatedPress RIO DE JANEIRO Brazilianpolicesaid Thursday that swimmer Ryan Lochte and three U.S. teammates were not robbed after a night of partying, and the intoxicated athletes instead van- dalized a gas station bathroom and were questioned by armed guards be- fore they paid for the damage and left. The robbery that was or wasn't has become the biggest spectacle outside of the Olympic venues in Rio, cast- ing a shadow over American Olym- pians amid an otherwise remarkable run at the Summer Games. The or- dealwasalsoablowtoBrazilians, who for months endured scrutiny about whether the city could keep athletes and tourists safe given its long history of violence. "Norobberywascommittedagainst these athletes. They were not victims of the crimes they claimed," Civil Po- liceChiefFernandoVelososaidduring a news conference. The police account came in direct contrast to claims from Lochte's attor- ney earlier in the week. The attorney, Jeff Ostrow, had insisted the swim- mer had nothing to gain by making the story up. He, as well as Lochte's fa- ther and agent, did not return phone calls seeking comment. The swimmers could potentially facepunishment—probation,suspen- sion, a fine or expulsion — under USA Swimming's code of conduct. It was not clear if the swimmers would face criminal charges, though police said the athletes could be charged with de- struction of property, falsely reporting a crime or both. Two of the swimmers — Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger — checked in to a flight out of Brazil late Thursday after a judge lifted the order seizing their passports and keeping them in the country. They had testified about theincidentearlierintheday,andBra- zilians chanted "liar" as they left the police building. "Theydidnotlieintheirstatements. They never lied to journalists. The Bulldogs hadn't com- pleted a season since 2010 when they went 2-8, so last year's 4-5 season — a home game against Redding Christian was struck from the schedule due to a mal- function with the field lights — was considered a success. It also proved the team has some play-makers. Then-sophomore Alex Rus- sell led the league in receiving yards with 388, was second in total points with 142 and total touchdowns with 21 and fifth in rushing yards with 1,404. Russell returns as a junior and in a new role, taking snaps at the quarterback position, as part of a Wildcat formation. "The idea is to put the ball in the play-maker's hands and have him make decisions," said coach Jake Daricek, who's tak- ing over this year as head coach. Other returning players in- clude senior Josue Orozco who picked up 190 yards and a touchdown on 45 carries and pulled in 4 catches for 63 yards and a touchdown in 2015. On defense he made 29 solo tack- les, 3 sacks and had an inter- ception. Junior Henry Mchale and se- nior Jose Chavez join Russell in the backfield along with fresh- man Hunter Landingham. Mchale played defense in 2015 and returned kicks. Chavez played defense. Joe Myers and Kyle Wood will serve as Russell's targets and Daricek said both had im- pressed him in practice. Wood, a senior, had 7 receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown in 2015 and 171 all purpose yards. Myers is new to the team. Daricek said the entire offen- sive line is made up of return- ing players and that experience at the line will be key to the suc- cess of his offensive weapons. Another key will be fresh- man Hunter Landingham, who Daricek said will play in the backfield. Tony Chambliss and Perry Mathues, both seniors, are standouts on defense, Daricek said. With 18 players on the ros- ter, Daricek said man will only need to play on one side of the ball. Despite some youth said the team won't have an issue com- peting with some of the top teams in the league, including the rival Mercy Warriors who beat the Bulldogs 54-20 in 2015. The teams will meet at Sacred Heart School Oct. 15 in week 7. Daricek knows a bit about 8-man football, having played with the Arena Football League's San Jose Sabercats. Before that he played for Uni- versity of South Florida and New Mexico Highlands Uni- versity, has attended NFL com- bines and been invited to work out with several NFL teams. The season kicks off for the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26 in Los Molinos against the Weed Cougars, who are moving down to 8-man this year. With the athletes in place and new systems on both of- fense and defense, Daricek said the team is ready to put on a show. "Come out and watch, be- cause it's going to be exciting," Daricek said. FOOTBALL BULLDOGSARELOOKINGTO CAPITALIZE ON EXPERIENCE CHIP THOMPSON — DAILY NEWS The Los Molinos Bulldogs run through drills during a Wednesday practice. By Cam Inman Bay Area News Group ENGLEWOOD, COLORADO If all goes according to the San Fran- cisco 49ers plan, arm-weary quarterback Colin Kaepernick will make his exhibition-season debut next week, and definitely not this Saturday night against the host Denver Broncos. "Hopefully we can get him back full next week so we can get a game under his belt," coach Chip Kelly said Thursday before the 49ers second straight day of practicingattheBroncos' facility. Kaepernick showed no dis- comfort and had zip on the ball Thursday as he threw 47 passes on the side, and not against the Broncos defense. "They're easing him back into throwing right now," Kelly said. "Talking to him, he says he feels really good about it. But we don't want to throw him back out there and have a setback right now. "From what we understand, it's not a long-term thing." Kaepernick looked 100 per- cent during his two throwing sessions Thursday with assis- tant equipment manager Doc Dressler. Kaepernick warmed up with 10-yard passes before pro- gressing to 15 and 25 yards. Run- ning back Carlos Hyde caught a few of those passes, too. Kaepernick hasn't thrown in team drills since last Wednes- day, the result of what he ini- tially called a tight shoulder but the team has since classified as a tiredarm.Kellytermedita"mus- cle" issue Thursday. "It's like a lot of times when you have a muscle injury, all of a sudden'HeyIfeelgreat,'andthen all of a sudden the guy re-injures 49ERS Kaepernick ruled out against Broncos By Jimmy Durkin Bay Area News Group The Raiders didn't excite any- body with their lackluster perfor- mance in Thursday's exhibition loss to the Green Bay Packers. The offense looked asleep at the wheel, the defense was gashed on the opening drive for the sec- ond straight week and the back- ups couldn't come to the rescue in a 20-12 loss at Lambeau Field. This might've been the closest thingtoadressrehearsaltheRaid- ers will have this preseason. They host the Tennessee Titans next week in the typically critical third exhibition game. But they also face the Titans a month later in Week 3 oftheseason, sotheymaynotwant to show them much. The Raiders played their start- ers for the entire first half Thurs- day, while Packers sat many of their top line players, most nota- bly quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Green Bay grinded out a 14- play, 74-yard drive to start the game, with Eddie Lacy picking up 45 yards on the ground and scor- ing the touchdown. The Packers also scored a third-quarter touch- down when John Crockett trucked through a tackle attempt by Cory James. Oakland managed all of 187 yards of offense and seven first downs in the loss, while picking up 10 more penalties for 96 yards. Here'swhatwelearnedfromthe Raiders' second preseason game: Threetakeaways OFFENSE OFF-TRACK The Raid- ers had just four first downs and 73 total yards in the first half de- spite running with the starters the whole way. Oakland isn't running its full playbook and is probably holding back some of its better plays. But when you've got a talented ros- ter, you want to see that physi- cal ability take over and lead to some plays. Quarterback Derek Carr has now led seven drives in two pre- season games and the Raiders have just six points to show for it. That may not mean much come the regular season, but points are always nice to see. IT'SALLVANILLA The game-plan- ning hasn't started yet, so it's al- ways prudent to not read too much into these preseason games. Coach Jack Del Rio wasn't con- cerned with any aspects of his team's defensive scheme when the Packers easily drove down for the opening touchdown. He felt his team just needed to get its pad level down and get off blocks. "It was really pretty simple," Del Rio said in a halftime interview on the television broadcast. "They weren't doing anything. It's a pre- season game. They were running stretches and bootlegs. We settled down and played a little better." MACK ATTACK If there's anybody ontherosterwhocould'vewatched this one from his couch, it's Khalil Mack. But he was out there with the starters for the whole first half looking like his dominant self.
