4B Daily News – Saturday, June 23, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith What can faiths do to Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery, Kansas City, Mo.: All faiths encourage good actions, positive virtues and personal responsibility and see themselves and the world as sacred. Yet there is still much suffering in the world, and much of it is caused by religions themselves. bring civility to society? McClatchy Newspapers LEAD BY EXAMPLE After the Day of Prayer The Spirit of the Living God was palpable on the Redding City Hall Plaza during Wednesday Night's Prayer and Praise rally and Thursday's Noon observance of the day. peace that permeated the very concrete was evident alongside the pleasure the Lord takes when His people acknowl- edge Him in a public venue. The Therefore, it seems what is needed is better interfaith understanding. It is through interfaith dialogue that we can find the common quality of all religions that is of humani- tarian ideals. By working individually and together we can create the causes and conditions for achieving a more peaceful world. It is up to each of us to first work on changing our own inner feelings of anger, hatred or prejudice. We must replace those negative emotions with compassion and lov- ing kindness for all people, not just for those who are close to us, but for everyone _ even our enemies. Only then can we encourage our political representatives and leaders to do the same. We have seen many times throughout history how one person can make a difference in the world. We should lead by example, both as individuals and as a nation. From the Buddhist perspective it is believed that our fundamental nature is basically good. It is our nature to want to help others. Therefore, we can do much to bring about peace in the world. It was Gandhi who said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." BEGIN TO RECONCILE The Rev. R.L. Baynham, pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kan.: This question is profound. If we define civility as having good manners and behavior, then we are able to at least start at a place where we can begin to reconcile. The material I have read regarding the relationship religion has with society and how we may impact it is overwhelming. One of the difficulties is that each religious group has its own set of moral teachings, and therefore it becomes extremely difficult to establish a single pattern in which man can achieve a harmonious life among his peers. We believe that the teachings of the Bible provide a central starting point in bringing man into the right relationship with his creator and his fellow man. Based upon what we are observing in today's world, we are watching nations being torn apart because of greed and status. The lack of civility has become a greater part of this life's experience. From every part of the world we are watching the tearing down of society, families and institu- tions. Faith groups must then continue to help redefine quality of life and belief in a system of good will and elim- inate the competition to be the only voice. Each group has enhancing qualities that provide a vehi- cle by which we can achieve wholesomeness, fairness and honesty within our system. Simple things like treating our neighbor like we want to be treated are avenues that we can walk and that will bring about civility. After prayer at least two demonic spirits left him and he was visibly calmed, saying he could no longer hear the voices and that he too was at peace. But mostly it was that everyone involved felt and enjoyed that peace of God which passes all understanding. That peace is acknowl- edged by those who know God and by those who do not during this week of public celebration. There generations and many spheres of influ- ence – from Sheriff Tom Bosenko and Supervisor Les Baugh to local entrepreneur Blair Reynolds and leaders of Parachurch ministries from Carenet to Good News Res- cue Mission prayed for God's blessing on California. Restaurateur and local legend Chef Cal DeMercurio prayed and gave God glory while John Mahan prayed for Israel and for God's Kingdom to come all over the world. The unity of which I speak James Perhaps the sweetest dimension of this week was the unity that prevailed in the plaza and breezeway as people of many denominations and tribes came together to speak and sing our depen- dence on the Father who loves us from His throne, comes among us as the Son, and lives in our midst through the Spirit. This year was a wonderful riot of both color and style as Second Bap- tist Church provided the worship music on Wednesday Night and the National Day of Prayer Praise Band – a com- posite of worship leaders from many backgrounds – led us Thursday. Sec- ond Baptist Senior Pastor Bonnie Daniels came down from the platform Wednesday to dance and link arms with the MC – me – as she sang an extended version of "I Need You; You Need Me; We are part of God's Body." Thursday saw leaders from multiple LOS ANGELES (MCT) — President Barack Obama wasn't mentioned by name, but he was clearly the target Thursday as the nation's Roman Catholic bishops began their "Fortnight for Freedom" campaign with a renewed attack on a feder- al mandate for private employers to provide free contraceptive coverage to workers. op William Lori of Balti- more told worshipers at a nationally televised Mass, "will force conscientious The mandate, Archbish- was seriously assaulted in an article that ran on the front page of the Redding Record- Searchlight – above the fold – on April 26. The headline spoke of schism within the regional churches – as ugly a word as I know – and gave the impression sniping at each other is a recreational activity for Christian leaders. Two men – present- ed as local leaders – made statements about a prominent church with whom they disagree. (Of course they are enti- tled to their disagreements.) They out- lined plans for a weekend conference they said was designed to put that church in its place. Reality is that nei- ther of these men is a recognized leader. did focus on the sufficiency of Christ – as it was named – and spent not a moment in the kind of sniping predict- ed for it by these men. The leaders to whom I have spoken in the wake of that article were without exception as horrified as I was to read it. Reality is that the conference Wilson GodTalk anything to hide, but because honor- able people talk to those with whom they have an issue, not about them. Unfortunately I was unable to persuade anyone but myself to publicly disavow the contents of the article. I addressed and disavowed those contents myself – being careful to speak also about the healthy ways in which we deal with each other – at both Wednes- day's and Thursday's events. The unity we shared at National Day of Prayer is not based on agreement at every bend in the road, nor is it a superficial commit- ment to play nicely with others. It is instead grounded in the joy of mutual submission to an all powerful and all loving Lord and the assurance that dis- putable matters will be settled in their appointed time. We do, after all, serve that same Jesus who said (John 8:32) that the act of hanging with Him will itself lead us into all truth and set us free in that reality. My prayer is that local Christians will focus on demonstrating that mutu- al love and respect for which our Mas- ter is justly famous. When there is con- troversy let us have each others' backs rather than stabbing each other's backs. The world desperately needs such a demonstration. agreed with me that we take our issues to one another – as we are commanded to do in the Gospels – and never to the press. We do this not because we have private employers to vio- late their consciences" by making them offer "repro- ductive services that are morally objectionable." The Catholic Church considers birth control a sin, and has strenuously fought the Obama admin- istration and its Depart- ment of Health and Human Services over the rule, which goes into effect Aug. 1. Churches are exempt from the requirement, but the Catholic bishops say the government's definition of a church is too narrow They James A. Catholic bishops continue protest of contraception mandate and leaves out faith-based institutions such as chari- ties, schools and hospitals that employ or serve most- ly non-Catholics. "Friends," said Lori, speaking at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption in Baltimore "we must not allow the government _ any govern- ment, of any time, of any party _ to impose such a restrictive definition on our beloved church or any church."
