ByMarilynAdams Computersareprepro- grammed. Default means: a preselected option ad- opted by a computer pro- gram or other mecha- nism when no alternative is specified by the user or programmer. The Bible talks about how we are prepro- grammed, and how our default for rebellion against God — sin — was set. Yet, it also tells us the wonderful news of how we can be reprogrammed. We do not have to be bound in our default. Let's look at His way out. First our default, and then God's higher way for our lives. Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." Notice the word all; that means everyone without exception. We were born in sin. We were alienated from the life of a Holy God. We were without hope, preprogrammed as slaves to sin. This is not an encouraging picture. These two verses help us see that prepro- grammed condition. Ephe- sians 2:2-3 says, "In which we once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others." There is great news. The Bible also tells us how we can be reprogrammed. It describes in detail how our default can be trans- formed. It is the same as the metamorphosis of the caterpillar. The caterpillar melts in- side the cocoon, and from that liquid the butterfly is formed. Romans 12:2 says, "And be not conformed to this world, but be trans- formed by the renew- ing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." It all starts with faith in God. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." Through salvation all our sins are forgiven, and we stand before God as though we never sinned. We are justified. Romans 5:1-2 says, "Therefore, hav- ing been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God." God's plan of salva- tion began before He ever laid the foundation of the world. Ephesians 1:4 says, "Just as He chose us in Him before the founda- tion of the world, that we should be holy and with- out blame before Him in love." How amazing is that! God chose you to be with Him through eter- nity. You can receive this gift of eternal life by be- lieving in His Son, Jesus Christ. You must acknowl- edge that you are a sin- ner, and that you have fallen short of God's stan- dard. You then believe in your heart that Jesus died for your sins. He bore all of your sins, past, present, and future on the cross. He suffered the wrath of God that was your due. As you believe in Him as your personal Savior, He will give you His gift of eternal life. His promise is fulfilled in Himself. He cannot lie. His word is in- corruptible. 1 Peter 1:23 says, "Having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever." 'Power of Thoughts' is about how our thoughts either enhance or destroy our physical, emotional, and spiritual health. You can buy them through Amazon.com. GOD TALK How we are all reprogrammed Cana'sVoice The public is invited to hear Cana's Voice in con- cert at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 at First Church of God, 1005 S. Jackson St. in Red Bluff. Cana's Voice is known for being able to sing ev- ery genre within Chris- tian music ranging from Southern Gospel, Inspo and CCM. No matter what your preference, you will love Cana's Voice. The band has quickly become one of the most popular artists in Christian music and is consistently on the top of the Billboard sales charts. Jody McBrayer traveled 12 years with the highly ac- claimed and multi-award- winning group Avalon. TaRanda Greene has re- ceived many prestigious awards, due to her awe-in- spiring ability to deliver a song. Her powerful voice and testimony have landed her as a regular featured vocalist on Grammy award winning Brooklyn Taberna- cle Choir projects. Doug Anderson has gar- nered 13 Dove Awards as both a soloist and as a mem- ber of Ernie Haase and Sig- nature Sound as well as one Grammy nomination. Dur- ing his time there the group had three videos and one CD to reach Gold status in Billboard sales. This is a free concert and a love offering will be taken. Cana'sVoiceconcertcomingtoRedBluff GOSPEL By Darcy Costello The Associated Press SACRAMENTO A Califor- nia lawmaker announced Wednesday he is removing a contentious provision of his bill that would have allowed LGBT students to more eas- ily sue religious schools for discrimination, conceding defeat to religious colleges that had launched a cam- paign against it. The measure would have eliminated a longstanding exemption from state anti- discrimination laws for re- ligious institutions, poten- tially opening them to civil rights lawsuits from stu- dents and employees. Many religious schools heavily op- posed removing the exemp- tion and called the bill an attack on their free exercise of religion. A weaker version of the bill, which Democratic state Sen. Ricardo Lara of Bell Gardens said he would submit Thursday, still man- dates that institutions dis- close exemptions from fed- eral Title IX rules against discrimination. It would also require universities to report if a student has been expelled for violat- ing a school's "moral code of conduct," which is often tied to religious beliefs and can include anti-transgen- der or strict sexuality provi- sions. The expulsion report- ing would allow lawmakers to track how often such dis- missals occur. The bill must pass the Assembly Appropriations Committee Thursday to stay alive. John Jackson, president of William Jessup Uni- versity, who had opposed the bill, signaled tentative support for the changes Wednesday. "It's a mediated settle- ment," Jackson said. "The senator got what he wanted in terms of protecting LGBT students and religious col- leges got what we wanted: The ability to continue to practice our religious con- viction and provide a safe and welcoming environ- ment for our students." The university was one of six schools that recently formed a campaign com- mittee called the Associa- tion of Faith Based Insti- tutions, which has raised $350,000 since the end of July. The committee, which was first reported by the Los Angeles Times, was formed in response to Lara's proposed legisla- tion and to advocate in the Legislature in the long-term on behalf of the state's religious schools, Jackson said.
