Check out what's going on in your neighborhood and the community. PAGE A2 LOCAL CALENDAR By Chip Thompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter REDBLUFF TehamaCounty has its first human case of West Nile virus for 2016 af- ter a person in the southern part of the county was di- agnosed, according to a re- cent press release from Te- hama County Health Ser- vices Agency. Neighboring counties of Butte, Glenn and Shasta also are experiencing West Nile virus activity, but have no human cases so far this year. A second Tehama County case is suspected, but has not been confirmed. Two sentinel chickens from south of Red Bluff were found to be infected with West Nile at the beginning of the month. Residents are urged to be aware of mosquitoes and take measures to re- duce their risk of contract- ing West Nile Virus and the more recent threat of Zika virus. WestNile West Nile virus is a po- tentially serious illness that affects the central nervous system. It is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected with the virus after feeding on birds with West Nile Vi- rus. The mosquitoes then bite humans, horses and other animals spreading the disease. Most individuals who are infected with West Nile Vi- rus do not experience any symptoms, but 1 out of 5 in- fections produce fever, rash, headaches and body aches. People older than 50 and those with chronic medical conditions are most likely to develop complications from West Nile Virus, so protect these members of your fam- ily. Zika Zika is an infectious dis- ease caused by the Zika vi- rus, which is transmitted to people by Aedes mosquitoes. Jaff Ioane Togi, 29, of Kent, Washington, was a passenger on a Greyhound bus when he and an- other man got into an argument, said California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Troy Somavia. CHP officers and the Tehama County Sheriff's deputies were called and Togi was arrested about 1:30 p.m. while the bus was pulled over on northbound Interstate 5 at Hooker Creek Road, Somavia said. By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Construction of the new location for Corner- stone Community Bank be- gan in earnest Monday when demolition of the build- ing that formerly housed the Riverside Bar and Grill started at the corner of An- telope Boulevard and River- side Way. "It's pretty exciting that we're going to build a new bank there that will replace the building we're currently in," said Cornerstone Pres- ident and CEO Jeff Finck. "We're very hopeful we can begin moving into it some- time at the end of the first or second quarter of next year." The $1.6 million project to build a new building was ini- tially slated to start at the end of summer or begin- ning of fall, however, there was potential for delay due to historical structures on the property. The bar and grill closed about four years ago and the building has been empty ever since. As a bank, the business is regulated by the Federal De- posit Insurance Corp., which means it must comply with the National Historic Pres- ervation Act. "A lot of people don't re- alize and it's fascinating that there are four old stage sheds that are the remnants of a motor lodge circa 1920," Finck said. "We are working with the state preservation office to figure out historic mitigation. In their current state, there's no way to re- habilitate them, but we plan to do some kind of display showing past historic use.
