KTVL reports that 31-year-old Edwin Lara en- tered the not guilty pleas Friday to attempted mur- der, kidnapping and other charges. Authorities say Lara shot a man at a ho- tel in Yreka, California, on Tuesday, then stole a car with a woman and her two sons still inside. Lara is also facing charges in Oregon in the death of 23-year-old Kaylee Sawyer. Sawyer's body was found Tuesday at the bot- tom of a small canyon be- tween the Central Oregon towns of Redmond and Sis- ters. Lara's wife reported that Lara had told her he hit Sawyer with a vehicle, kill- ing her, then panicked and hid her body, according to documents filed in court. Joseph Allison, Siskiyou County assistant district attorney, says Lara will re- main jailed in California without bail. MURDER CASE Oregon suspect pleads not guilty to California charges By Elliot Spagat and Julie Watson The Associated Press SAN DIEGO Two San Diego police officers were shot — one fatally — after a late- night stop turned into a gunfight, triggering a man- hunt that led to the capture of one wounded suspect in a ravine and an hours-long SWAT standoff Friday that ended after officers de- tained a second man who may have been involved. The shooting came as de- partments around the coun- try are on high alert follow- ing the killing of officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, this month. San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said it was unknown whether the San Diego attack was premed- itated. The chain of events un- folded over more than 12 hours in a blue-collar area of southeastern San Diego with modest single-story homes and streets lined with palm trees. It started about 11 p.m. Thursday when two vet- eran gang unit officers in bulletproof vests stopped a person on a street. Almost immediately a shootout en- sued and the officers called for backup. Authorities initially said the officers made a traffic stop involving a motorist, but clarified later that they were still trying to deter- mine whether it was a traf- fic stop or a stop to check out a pedestrian. "It happened extremely quickly," Police Chief Shel- ley Zimmerman said. "From the information that was put out that a stop was being made to that the of- ficers called for emergency cover to when the other offi- cers arrived on scene, we're talking very, very quickly. Seconds to a minute or so." Jonathan DeGuzman, a 16-year veteran of the force who was married with two children, suffered multi- ple gunshot wounds. The 43-year-old died at Scripps Mercy Hospital after doc- tors' efforts to save him failed. Wade Irwin, 32, under- went surgery after being shot and was expected to survive, Zimmerman said. His wife was at his side dur- ing surgery. Police swarmed the neighborhood where the shootout happened and quickly captured 52-year- old Jesse Gomez in a nearby ravine, Zimmerman said. He was in critical condi- tion Friday with a gunshot wound but was expected to survive. Police gave no fur- ther information about Go- mez or his role in the shoot- out except to say he was a suspect. During the search for a second man described as a "potential" suspect, res- idents were ordered to stay in their homes throughout the night as San Diego po- lice and officers from other law enforcement agencies scoured yards, streets and alleys. A helicopter hov- ered over the neighbor- hood. About nine hours after the shootout, heavily armed officers surrounded a house about a half-mile (about 1 kilometer) away, one of them using a loudspeaker to urge a man to surrender. Authorities also detonated several devices at the scene to draw him out and used tools to break windows and pound on the roof. White, Red Bluff, CA passed away peacefully on July 19, 2016, at the age of 84, after a two year battle with Leukemia. Dick was born in Winterset, Iowa, on June 21, 1932 to Robert & Thelma White. He fought hard, and to the very end. He will be re- membered for his gift of teaching, his mentoring of foot- ball and basketball officials, his ear for music, his love of all sports, (Go Giants and 49'ers!), and mostly, for his gift of telling a good story. Whether he was talking about sports, his childhood in Iowa, his parent's grocery store and how he got a piece of candy after school each day, or one of his special friendships, you had a vivid image of his story. He was a remarkable orator. Dick married Gloria Nielson, of Paradise in 1951. They met on the school bus and were married for 30 years be- fore she died in 1981 of Leukemia. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Thelma White, his brother Jim White, and his beloved cat, Gabby. He is survived by daughter Julie Bley (Ken), of Orangevale, CA, a son, Mike White (Darla), Renton, WA, two grand-daughters, Jessica Harmon (Jared) of Chico, CA, and Lindsey Drake (Brandon) of Vilsek, Germany, and nieces and nephews. Dick was a Boy Scout from a young age where he ach- ieved the highest level of Eagle Scout. He spoke often of his memories at Camp Mitigwa with his friends, Jim John- son, Kermit Cook, Don Pocter, and Richard Harrison. He was in the Marching Band at Winterset and Chico High Schools and during his Army service from 1954-1956. Band was instrumental in his decision to become a music teacher. He was an educator in Red Bluff for 35 years where he taught elementary and middle school band; 4th grade and became a principal before retiring in 1991. He truly loved his job, his colleagues and the parents and children it brought into his life. One of Dick's greatest passions was officiating. He refereed high school football and some college football for nearly 45 years and high school basketball for 25 years. He was also a college basketball official observer and evaluator. He met and mentored countless officials over the years and made many lifelong friends. Along the way he discovered golf. He said it was "the most frustrating game" he'd ever played! And he loved it playing as often as he could including his time with the "dawn patrol" before his illness. He also played Slow Pitch Softball until he was well into his 70's including a couple of trips to the Huntsman Senior World Games. He loved the game, and the fellowship. The family would like to thank his friends that helped him get to and from chemo and blood transfusions; brought him food and sometimes just kept him company or looked out for him including Meg, Chris, Gregg, Leroy, Brian, Jack, Sherry and her husband Duane, Alan, Velma; all the nurses at St. Elizabeth's Hospital; Dan and team at St. Elizabeth's Infusion Center; the nurses at the Chemo Center in Redding; and Brookdale Assisted Living. Thank you for all you did to help Dick live independently and courageously, and to carry on until he was just too tired to talk anymore. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 6th at Wilcox Oaks Golf Club, Red Bluff, at 1pm. All are welcome and the attire is casual with suggested Giants or 49ers shirts! In lieu of flowers, the family requests dona- tions to the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center or to the charity of your choice. EDWIN JACOB STROMAN, JR. A friend wrote this about our father: "I respected your father greatly. He helped so many that knew him. His frank honesty kept us in line when our youthfulness led us down the wrong path. He wasn't afraid to tell it like it was, which is so rare these days. He was a man whose values of hard work, honesty, stick-to-it-iveness, no ex- cuses, discipline and loyalty (to name a few) created the potential for you to be the best!" There will be a memorial service on August 5, 2016, in the gymnasium of Tehama Family Fitness Center (10:00 am). This will be followed by a burial at the Northern California Veteran's Cemetery in Igo (12:30 pm). The Fre- mont Police Honor Guard will take part in the ceremony.
