Nieder '05 Pledge Class of 1966 Reunited This Spring O ver the course of a magical week in April, members of the 1966 pledge class of the Pi Deuteron Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta reunited, some of them seeing each other for the first time since graduation nearly 55 years ago. They traveled from across the country; one flying all night from his home in California 2,350 miles away, and another driving from Iowa and then making a four-hour ferry crossing to get to the reunion (not bad for 73 year olds)! The reunion was held on Grand Bahama Island and was organized by John Hondros '66, former social chairman for his KU pledge class. The idea for the gathering was conceived after a group of Brothers came together for two very sad occasions last summer, laying to rest Brother Bill Henry '66 in Baldwin, Missouri, and meeting again one week later in Denver to support Brother John Nelson '66 at the funeral for his wife, Kay. Hondros was adamant that the group have an opportunity to spend time together for a happy occasion, so he invited the entire pledge class to spend a week at his property in Freeport. Eight members of the class of 1966 were able to make the trip. In addition to host John Hondros and his wife, Linda, were Dale Peel '66, Susan and Tom Mitchell '66, Katie and Steve Brooks '66, Barb and Bill Boulware '66, Cathy and Howard Wilcox '66, Ron Ferguson '66 and Cyndi Gentry, and John Nelson '66. The group enjoyed walks on the beautiful beach, boating, fishing, paddle boarding, jet skiing, a golf outing, swimming, dining together as a family, and most of all, getting the chance to catch up on each other's lives. They shared their personal stories every evening after dinner, one at a time, getting the opportunity to tell their unique tale. They spoke of service in Vietnam, missionary work, weddings, jobs and careers, and children and grandchildren. They laughed together over the funny parts, and supported others who told of losing spouses, deceitful business partners, or how serving in the war changed them forever. The Brothers have all had successful lives and believe that the credit goes more to working hard than to being business savvy. It was immediately apparent that no matter how many years had passed, this group was still as close as they were when they lived in the Fraternity house together. It The class of 1966 reunited this spring in the Bahamas. Standing from left are Bill Boulware '66, Howard Wilcox '66, Tom Mitchell '66, Hobie Hondros, Ron Ferguson '66, and Steve Brooks '66. Seated from left are Dale Peel '66, John Hondros '66, and John Nelson '66. (Continued on page 4) Visit www.kufiji.org for all things KU FIJI!
