Idreamedmyselfinthe stands of a football sta- dium. As I looked over the field a ban- ner with the embla- zoned Lion — Aslan — from C. S. Lewis' Nar- nia Chron- icles across the field. I would soon know which team was represented by Aslan as it burst through the banner and onto the field. A leonine roar filled yet contained the stadium when what burst through the banner was no ath- letic team. Aslan Himself bounded onto the field and a thunderous voice of irre- futable authority boomed, "Do not mistake the repre- sentation for the reality." The message was clear. A banner depicting Aslan is good; the authentic King is the best. I remem- bered my old mentor say- ing — again and again — the good is the enemy of the best. I come from a tradi- tion believing God events — Holy Communion, Bap- tism, forgiveness through a human representative, or authentic prophecy — are the really real sym- bols of some aspect of the God we serve Who is ac- tive here. They represent God by participating in His life as well as in ours. At our best, however, we are not so foolish as to take the participating rep- resentation for the whole — just a taste. Communion is not the heavenly ban- quet; it whets the appe- tite by God's gracious gift- ing. Yet some of my broth- ers become so caught up in the grand reality of God walking the earth with us in the act they forget the much grander and more personal reality. This Per- son loves to show us Him- self but gets rather ticked off when we fail to look through the representation to He Who is represented. By stalling in the sacra- mental we risk trading Heaven's Feast for Happy Hour. The good is indeed the enemy of the best. Californians have been praying for drought relief the past four years. In late 2014 some of us kicked prayer to a new level when we took seriously God's call to repentance in 2 Chronicles 7:14. A grass- roots day of repentance — meant to be more season than twenty-four-hour day — in the spirit of the He- brew yom or day — began to shape. Eventually the entire West Coast — in- cluding British Columbia — became committed to daily prayer over our his- tory of shedding innocent blood, sexual sin, covenant breaking, and idolatries of various types. That was the good. The best was the more positive re-focus of attention on God Himself — in the Person of His Son through the power of His Spirit — that alone pre- pares us for the present- in-its-infancy Great Awak- ening. The fruit is tremen- dous. Rain and snow are abundant in California de- spite meteorologists' pre- dictions of snowfall even more impoverished than recent years. Lakes and reservoirs continued to fill even after El Nino was de- clared spent. In addition, members of the state leg- islature speak of a new and cleansing-the-atmo- sphere spirit of respect for the Word of God in assem- bly and senate — a biparti- san spirit. More and more Christians are running for office — not to govern by dogma but to bless cul- ture with the integrity for which Christians ought al- ways to be known. In my city alone more than fifty successful start- up businesses are reported launched this past year. Last but not least, the en- tertainment industry has released at least nine films and an infusion of televi- sion programs over ninety days (or so) overtly honor- ing God while presenting their art with excellence. More are promised. All this fruit is good; it is very good. But is it the best? All these did not be- gin in fifty-two days of re- pentance. They began in the context of prayer — and walking out the vi- sions cast and the exper- tise exercised — over sev- eral difficult years. There were anywhere from a few hundred to a few thou- sand consistently partic- ipating in the events. I would be the last one ar- rogant enough to say, "Looka me and a move- ment I visioned and pro- claimed." Yet I would be the first to say these phe- nomena came to presence in the wake of a 2 Chroni- cles season of repentance climaxed in events like the rolling days of repen- tance. I will trumpet while I have breath that these things are gifts from God requiring human partici- pation — not generation — and that we still have a lot of shedding of blood, sex- ual immorality, covenant breaking and substituting representations of God for God Himself — idolatry — to acknowledge. More im- portantly, we have ongo- ing opportunity and obli- gation to keep re-focusing on God instead of saying, "Been there; done that." This is the heart of repen- tance, and its necessity until the Lord returns. The good is indeed the enemy of the best. And our God really is a lion. The Lion of Judah. NEIGHBORHOOD FULL GOSPEL Church to offer vacation bible school By Nicole Winfield The Associated Press VATICAN CITY The Vatican is striking back at conserva- tive critics of Pope Francis' landmarkdocumentonfam- ily life, ratcheting up its de- fense of the pope with new vigor as bishops begin im- plementing the document around the world. The Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano on Wednesdaycarriedalengthy essay by an Italian Catho- lic historian insisting that Francis' "The Joy of Love" was absolutely in line with his predecessors and church doctrine on the thorny issue of whether divorced and civ- illy remarried Catholics can receive Communion. Earlier this month, the Vatican-approved maga- zine La Civilta Cattolica ran an interview with Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn in whichtheViennaarchbishop pointedly rejected conser- vative claims that Francis' work didn't count as an au- thoritative teaching docu- ment. Both articles upped the ante in the increasingly divisive theological and ide- ological battle sparked by "The Joy of Love," and were publishedontheeveofFran- cis' trip to Poland, where the Jesuitpopewillsymbolically deliver the document to the deeply conservative Polish church at a youth rally next week. When it was released in April, "The Joy of Love" immediately sparked con- troversy because it opened the door to civilly remarried Catholics receiving Com- munion. Church teaching holds that unless these di- vorced and remarried Cath- olics obtain an annulment — a church decree that their first marriage was invalid — they cannot receive the sac- rament, since they are seen as committing adultery.
