Rodeo FROM PAGE 1 spend four great years un- der his guidance in Minne- sota," Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said in a state- ment. "He was a real trail- blazer and his impact on the game continues to live through the many success- ful coaches that he men- tored. One of his phrases, or 'Denny-isms' as we call them, is 'We're going to plan our work and work our plan.' I still use that 'Denny- ism' today. Coach Green is going to be missed dearly by everyone that was lucky enough to know him." Green also coached the Arizona Cardinals from 2004-06, leading them to a 16-32 mark. He finished his NFL career with a 113- 94 record. Green had two stints as an assistant with the 49ers, both under Walsh. He was the special teams coach in 1979, then spent three seasons from 1986- 88 as Walsh's wide receiv- ers coach. In between, he was the offensive coordi- nator at Stanford in 1980 and spent five years as the head coach at Northwest- ern from 1981-85. At Stanford, Green took over a team that went 3-6-2 in its final season under Elway. The Cardi- lnal were 3-8 in their first year under Green, then im- proved to 5-6 and 8-4. His top players included run- ning back Tommy Vardell and defensive lineman Bob Whitfield, father of current Stanford player Kodi Whit- field. One of Green's assistants at Stanford was secondary coach Willie Shaw, father of current Cardinal coach David Shaw. Other well- known members of Green's staff were former Balti- more Ravens' head coach Brian Billick and ex-Stan- ford coach Tyrone Willing- ham. Green FROM PAGE 1 Froome did not panic, quickly borrowed a team- mate's bike and salvaged his torn yellow jersey af- ter crossing the finish line 36 seconds behind Bardet. The Frenchman climbed to second place overall af- ter Froome's previous clos- est rival, Bauke Mollema, crashed and never recov- ered. Froome increased his lead by 19 seconds, hold- ing a lead of 4 minutes, 11 seconds over Bardet, with two-time runner-up Nairo Quintana of Colombia moving up to third, 4:27 back. Froome slipped on road paint as he crossed a white line and hit the ground just 8 miles from the finish of the nervy 91-mile ride to Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc featuring four ascents. He was able to continue racing after swapping bikes with teammate Ger- aint Thomas. "I think that I hit one of the white lines on the road and lost my front wheel," Froome said at the finish, his right knee heavily ban- daged. "I'm okay, I'm lucky that nothing is seriously in- jured." Froome was descend- ing at a relatively cautious speed of almost 28 mph when he fell. With his jer- sey torn, blood dripping down his right leg, cuts and bruises on his back and blood on his right el- bow, Froome understand- ably looked uncomfortable on Thomas' bike. Despite the circum- stances, Froome caught up with the group of favorites in the brutal final climb to Le Bettex with the help of teammate Wouter Poels. Froome crossed the line grimacing in pain, then put his arm around Poels to thank him for the support. "I just lost a bit of skin but today," Froome said. "It was great for me to have teammates all the way up until the finish there, with Wout in particular and all the guys. It was a great team effort and it feels great to be one day closer to Paris." Cycling FROM PAGE 1 fore the Aug. 1 trade dead- line. They have their scout- ing reports and their short lists. They even received in- person impressions of two potential targets Friday night when they faced the Yankees' Andrew Miller and Chapman. Mac Williamson drilled a tying, pinch double off Miller in the eighth — just the second time the fearsome left-hander has blown a lead this season. Gregor Blanco hit a lead- off double against Chap- man in the ninth, turning around a 101 mph fastball, but the Giants couldn't ad- vance him. Denard Span grounded out, Angel Pagan hit a floater to second base and Belt struck out to seal a loss in which the Giants went 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position. The club is batting .132 in 53 at-bats in those situations over the six losses. Masahiro Tanaka pitched a bit cleaner than Madison Bumgarner, who righted himself after a la- borious first two innings in the 90-degree steam. The Giants wasted chances with runners in scoring position in the middle innings, and that meant trying to come back against the Yankees' three- headed monster in the bullpen. They managed a run in the seventh off Del- lin Betances when Jarrett Parker walked, Span dou- bled and Romine couldn't corral a wild pitch, and Williamson came through with their only clutch hit of the night. Unlike the last time Bumgarner pitched in an American League park, Giants manager Bruce Bo- chy did not let his burly left-hander swing a bat. Prior to Bumgarner's June 30 start at Oakland, no ma- jor league manager had in- tentionally sacrificed the designated hitter to let a pitcher take his turn in the lineup since 1974. Bochy listed the swel- tering forecast among his reasons. He said Bumgar- ner would be taxed enough in mid-90 degree tempera- tures and the kind of hot- house humidity that takes a toll on players used to playing in AT&T Park's crisper drawer. Even a North Carolina native like Bumgarner (10-6) has fessed up to los- ing steam in hot climates a time or two in past sea- sons. Sure enough, Bumgar- ner glistened but did not sparkle as the Yankees made him work hard in the first two innings. Brett Gardner singled and Star- lin Castro hit an RBI dou- ble to start the game, with Castro taking third on Crawford's errant throw. The Yankees were not able to get the second run of the inning home. Bumgarner issued a pair of walks along with a pair of shallow fly outs, and al- though he stranded the bases loaded, it cost him 24 pitches compared to just five for Tanaka. The time of posses- sion continued to favor the Yankees in the second inning, when Bumgar- ner again did well to hold them to one run. Ronald Torreyes singled and was set to stop at second base on Castro's single to left field. Instead, Pagan over- ran the ball for an error and the Yankees had run- ners at the corners. Carlos Beltran poked a two-out hit through the left side that likely would have scored Torreyes, anyway. But the error, and another throwing demerit on Craw- ford in the seventh, con- tinued a troubling trend: the Giants, who played so many clean games in May and June, have turned sud- denly erratic.
