12 www.DesertMessenger.com July 13, 2016 It was my birthday....GASP.... a big one, and I decided to be a complete hedonist all day long: no daily workout and a free breakfast at Denny's, followed by a massage from Robyn, my fantastic massage therapist. Robyn is also a physi- cal therapist who got me through a rotator-cuff problem without surgery. How fortunate I was to have met her at the massage school in Flagstaff when she was a stu- dent. Robyn greeted me with a big hug, and when I put the money for the massage on the table, she said, "Nope, no money today. It's your birthday." Then she presented me with a little bag with a pair of beau- tiful sterling silver and turquoise earrings -- perfect for a turquoise bracelet I have back in Quartzsite. I put the earrings on right then and there and wore them all day. So far the day was surpassing my expecta- tions! BUT, there was another gift..... from nature! Earlier, while driv- ing to my massage appointment, a small bird (a wren or sparrow) hit my windshield. Oh dear! It just lay there on the windshield wiper. Was it alive? I thought about turn- ing the wiper on and dislodging the bird which was not moving. If I did that, it would be thrown into traffic and surely run over. So I did nothing. I began to think that maybe the bird was just stunned and would revive. I kept one eye on the bird and one on the road for the next few miles. The bird gradually opened its eyes. Next it lifted its head. At the turn off, I stopped at the first hiking area, turned off the engine, and checked on the bird. It seemed pretty alert. I needed something to cover the bird so that I could I pick it up and place it on the grass. I changed my mind and decided to gently lift the wiper blade. I only moved the wiper slightly, and the bird soared into the sky. I was delighted and thought what a good birthday omen this was. At my age, I don't really DO birth- days anymore, but a day like this makes being a year older a whole lot easier. When people DARE to ask my age, I either say, "I'm 39 and holding," OR I give them Gar- rison Keillor's priceless answer: "I'M IN MY EXTREMELY LATE 40s!" ~*~*~*~ "I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, So I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. By the time I got my leotards on, the class was over." ~Unknown ~*~*~*~ Jane's book is WANDERINGS: Living the Ordinary Extraordinari- ly (Stories from the Road).
