A young woman was bit by a nurse shark last month and rushed to the hospi- tal with the shark still attached to her arm! Rescuers could not get the shark to release its bite even though it had died. That was one stubborn shark — one that's a lot creepier than the stubborn Shark one of my readers has been dealing with. DEAR MARY: We pur- chased the Shark vacuum you so highly recommend. I do love the suction and cleaning prowess of the machine, but it's awk- ward and difficult to push around on good-quality plush carpeting. — Marge DEAR MARGE: Oh, dear. Something is not right! I can't be sure which model Shark you have (the one I love, rec- ommend and use nearly every day is the Shark Navigator Lift-Away Pro- fessional), but it should not be difficult to maneu- ver on carpet! Turn the brushroll fea- ture on. It's a self-propel- ling feature that pushes the Shark Pro forward, similar to a power lawn mower. Something tells me you don't have this feature turned on. Assuming we have the same model, take a look at yours. You should see a Power button and a Brushroll button. Power mode helps you vacuum hard surfaces like wood and tile. When you move to carpet you need to press the Brushroll but- ton. When the Brushroll is engaged and you step on the foot release, you can feel the feature kick in. The Shark will nearly vacuum the carpet on its own. If the suction is still too much for your plush car- pet you can make another adjustment. Toward the top of the handle there is a ring you can turn to ad- just the level of suction. Once you've made these adjustments, all you need to do is help steer the thing with minimal effort. I sure hope that helps. Nothing about the Shark Navigator Lift-Away Pro- fessional should make it awkward to push around. If you have a different model than mine, look for adjustments for suction and an indicator that the brushroll feature is en- gaged. And don't forget to make sure the filter is clean. DEAR MARY: I re- cently moved into an older home that has ra- diators. The family that lived here before must have never cleaned them. There is a buildup of dust that my vacuum can't reach, and I can't reach it with my fingers, either. Some of the dust is also ground in. I have had the sniffles since I moved in, and I believe it's from the dust. Can you recommend a way to clean these old things that won't cost me a fortune? I love getting your daily emails and learning new tricks and methods to save time and money. I es- pecially love your emails about cooking. I print out almost all of your recipes. — Jamie DEAR JAMIE: Thanks for the kind words and being such a loyal reader and fellow foodie! As for those radia- tors (radiation heat is the best, in my opinion, so I'm kinda envious of your situation), you need a radiator brush to deep- clean them now and also maintain them in the fu- ture. A radiator brush looks like a giant bottlebrush and is often used in the automotive repair busi- ness to everything from hoses to carburetors to engine blocks to radiators clean. I suggest you spend a couple extra bucks to purchase a high-qual- ity brush that won't fall apart after a few uses. The Tough Guy Radia- tor Brush ($18) will do a great job getting into the tight crevices. The radia- tors should work more ef- ficiently and stop blowing dust once you clean them. Hint: There's a short YouTube video called "How to clean a radiator." Watch it for a quick and easy lesson on how to use your new brush. DEAR MARY: I may have a solution for the reader who splattered hair dye on her white sink. I did the same thing and found that using hair bleach works great to re- verse the stain. You can buy it online, or go to a beauty supply store and pick up a bottle of de- veloper (20 or 30 vol- ume) and some powered bleach specifically made for bleaching hair. Mix the developer and pow- der to make a paste, and apply the paste on the stains using a dye brush. Wait 10 to 20 minutes, and then check the spots. They should be gone. — Angie DEAR ANGIE: Thanks for that great tip. Wouldyouliketosend a tip to Mary?
