TigerHeart SigEp There is a new SigEp in Columbia committed to SigEp Excellence. sigma phi epsilon missouri alpha P.O. Flags are courtesy of Brother Lorenz. W hen he arrived at Mizzou, Doug sanders '87 hadn't really considered joining a fraternity. He had a perception of what a fraternity was and thought it probably wasn't for him. But a friend who was visiting the Greek houses told Doug, "You really ought to see SigEp. There's a difference there. Give it a chance." So, Doug decided to take a look. Jim moisson '86 introduced himself, showing Doug that the group was down to earth and valued friendship. From there, it didn't take Doug long to get involved. "I found that the guys at SigEp were really dedicated and had a vision. I felt that too, and I believe if you're going to do something, go full in. The strength of an organization comes from the engagement and contribution of all members. I was an outgoing guy, so they got me involved with recruitment and new members." Living in the house, learning to adapt and work together, and his role as recruitment chairman prepared Doug for the career he would take up after college. With an education degree, Doug moved to Texas, where he had always wanted to live. He worked in sales, went back to school for an accounting degree, and ultimately found his fit in human resources, currently serving as a Senior Vice President in human resources for Santander Bank. "I learned at SigEp that you're always selling yourself. Even in recruitment, when you meet new guys, they get to know you first and then the organization. That translates into business and everything else in life. It's all about relationship building and being genuine. I honed and developed what I learned at SigEp into being comfortable with people and having confidence to get up, speak, and convince powerful people to move in a certain direction." Doug has renewed his SigEp bonds in the last few years, as his son, payton sanders '18, has become a member of Mo Alpha and is the current chapter President. "When Payton chose Mizzou, I took him to see SigEp as well as the other houses. I wanted the best for him and that ended up being SigEp. He fell in love with the place instantly and really dedicated himself to the fraternity. One of the best parts is that I now get e-mails from old buddies, some I haven't talked to in 30 years, who see his last name and tell me what a great leader Payton is. My close friendship with Jim Moisson, the first SigEp I met 33 years ago, has stayed strong to this day." Doug and his wife, Desiré, have three children: Courtney (a senior at Mizzou), Payton, and Nash. Outside of work, Doug has spent time coaching his kids' sports teams and is on the board of directors for the Arlington, Texas, Little League. mo alpha, long a place of balanced men spotlight on Doug sanders '87 visit us online www.sigepmizzou.org www.sigepmizzou.org
