BySamNisly Ilovewatchingmas- ter craftsmen at work. Several weeks ago a ce- ment slab was poured in my neighborhood. It was a joy to watch the proj- ect take shape. I could tell that the one in charge had done it many times be- fore. He was able with a few practiced moves to do what a lesser crafts- man would have struggled with. The easy relaxed movements told volumes about this man's experi- ence. He wasn't rattled or ruffled and fielded ques- tions from his spectators with ease. This master craftsman had developed his own style and was able to crank out excellence with ease. I feel certain he was able do more with less effort than many younger less experienced workmen. My master craftsman cement worker is an exam- ple of where I'd like to be in my Christian life. Let's face it, many of us have been reaching for more in our Christian lives. We have a general idea of where we want to go but aren't sure how to make it happen. That's where the idea of working smarter comes in. I'm a bit older than many and have been around for over six de- cades. In fact, I've been out past the mailbox a number of times and have got some serious experi- ence under my belt. How- ever, it's not like it used to be. Six or eight years ago I was jolted to realize that the local expert is be- ing replaced by YouTube videos and the internet. Word of mouth and expe- rience is being crowded off the road by the smart- phone. We live in a won- derful world where infor- mation is readily available to any and all. Here's an example of the world changing informa- tion that is out there—free for the having. Let me ex- plain it to you in the form of a story. IBM was a leader in the world of office machines and technology back be- fore Microsoft and Bill Gates hit the fan. They had offices and support staff all over the world and served their customers well. One IBM supervisor happened to be trained in research and sociology so he noticed that employees responded differently from one country to the next. In fact, he was able to in- vestigate and put on pa- per five different ways of thinking. Geert Hofstede noticed that some people think as individuals while others do "group think." He also realized that some cultures live one day at a time while others are more far sighted. Another way that people think dif- ferently involves how com- fortable they are with un- certainty. This simple teaching about culture helped me understand myself and a bit of my place in his- tory. I grew up in the ru- ral mid-west and thought I was an ordinary Ameri- can but suddenly realized that my cultural DNA was not ordinary. It helped me understand myself and my part in God's big story in a way I had never seen be- fore. Here's how it hap- pened: My sixteen year old daughter was reach- ing for more chances to meet the big world. We found a training class of- fered in a nearby town and so my wife, two teen- age children and I en- rolled. That class in Jop- lin, Missouri back in Janu- ary 2010 opened my eyes! I will never be the same be- cause of the jolt I received while studying "Perspec- tives." Part of these stud- ies included a look at cul- tures of the world from a scientific viewpoint. But wait, there's more. "Per- spectives on the World Christian Movement" gave me a whole new perspec- tive in a number of ways. I now see the big picture in a way I have never seen it before! I can see my place and I can more clearly see what God is doing. He is on a roll and would be happy for our help. There are over 130,000 Perspectives alumni scat- tered all over the United States. This cross-denom- inational program is of- fered at several hundred locations each year. Stu- dents meet weekly for fif- teen weeks and by grad- uation have made life long friends and are seri- ously looking at their fu- ture with tools and con- nections to make it hap- pen. I cannot think of a better way to celebrate our American Independence Day than by celebrating our dependence on God as a member of a Perspec- tives class. Don't work harder, work smarter. Per- spectives is offered in Red- ding this fall beginning August 9. Check us out on the website—www.per- spectives.org. SamandBrendaNisly moved to Redding in 2013. They belonged to the Amish Mennonite community before this event. Sam works as a handyman when not overseas. Their most recent adventure was six months in Mozambique. Sam coordinates the Redding Perspectives this fall. Sam's Perspectives territory joyfully includes Tehama County. GOD TALK Don't work harder, work smarter St. Paul Lutheran Church in Red Bluff will be holding a Bible Fun Day with the theme Christmas in July on Saturday, July 9. The event will run 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church, 455 Jefferson St. The free event will fea- ture the Christmas story, crafts, singing, games and lunch for children in second through eighth grades. Sign up by July 5 by calling Con- nie Maxey at 527-4810. ST. PAUL Lutheran Church to hold Christmas in July The Associated Press HARRISBURG, PA. A Penn- sylvania politician who apologized for criticiz- ing a church that posted a message wishing Muslims a "blessed Ramadan" at- tended a worship service and dined at a Harrisburg mosque. School board member Matthew Jansen, invited to attend the Hadee Mosque on Friday, told members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community that his re- marks earlier were part of a "knee-jerk reaction." Jansen is a member of the Spring Grove Area School District, based in York County, in the Har- risburg area. "I don't mean to mini- mize the gravity of what I said, but essentially it's just that, being feisty and try- ing to start a conversation and an argument, that's just who I am," said Jan- sen, an elected delegate to the Republican National Convention who supports Donald Trump. Jansen called to com- plain earlier this month after St. Paul's United Church of Christ, in Dal- lastown, posted a mes- sage on its sign "Wishing a blessed Ramadan to our Muslim neighbors." The Rev. Christopher Rodkey said the caller termed the sign "despicable" and re- ferred to Islam as a "god- less" and "pagan" religion. Jansen also posted a photo of the sign on social media with the church's phone number, but later apolo- gized for what he called "venting." At the mosque, Jansen and members listened to a service by Hassan Ahmed, who said the violence of some Muslims is not con- doned by the faith. Jansen later told the crowd that he hadn't previously known anything about Ahmadi- yya Muslim community, which has been in the United States for nearly 100 years, and adding that he believed learning about the community would take away misconceptions about Muslims. He later sat down with members of the mosque for the meal Mus- lims partake in after sun- set during Ramadan. Jansen said he accepted the mosque's invitation earlier in the week because "whenever somebody gra- ciously invites you to their hospitality, I think it's rude not to accept it." "I thought it was infor- mative and enlightening," he said. "This sect that is inside Islam is peaceful ... This is a group of people that has become an inte- gral part of society." Ahmed said Jansen's ap- pearance was productive, and after hearing Jansen's explanation of his call to the pastor, he believed Jan- sen's intentions were good. "(His appearance) shows that he is open-minded," Ahmed said. Akram Khalid, a mem- ber of the mosque from Chambersburg, said he was happy Jansen came, adding that he wasn't up- set about the earlier re- marks. "The problem is not to get upset, the problem is education," he said.
