TENNIS ITF Wimbledon Day 6: 5a.m., ESPN. Ontheair elingtwoweeksatRoland Garros that culminated with a victory over Serena Williams in the final. Asked whether com- ing into Wimbledon as the owner of a major trophy made her feel a weight on her shoulders, Muguruza replied: "No, not pressure. I think, for sure, more expec- tations from other people." "Honestly, for me, I just had very clear it was go- ing to be a rough tourna- ment for me after winning a Grand Slam and coming here," she continued. "Ev- erybody, you know, like, looking at me." Cepelova equaled her best showing at a major by reaching the third round, but this was not her first significant result. She beat Simona Halep in the first round at Wimbledon a year ago, also on No. 1 Court, and defeated Serena Wil- liams at a tournament in Charleston, South Caro- lina, in 2014. "Yeah," Cepelova said, "I like to play on the big courts." As the owner of seven Grand Slam singles titles, including five at Wimble- don, Venus Williams is ac- customed to being — and succeeding — on those stages. But on Thursday, she found herself on Court 18, with its seating capac- ity of 782 — a far cry from the nearly 15,000 at Centre Court. Williams, seeded eighth, had some trou- ble and needed 2 hours, but wound up getting past 20-year-old qualifier Maria Sakkari 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 — one of 10 singles victories for Americans on Thursday. Afterward, Williams did not complain about her placement at that venue. But she did offer some thoughts on the topic. "It's not the ideal sched- ule for the women. We'd like to see equal amount of matches. We don't want more, justthesameamount, that's all," said Williams, who was a leading voice in the push to get Wimbledon to offer equal prize money to men and women. Asked whether she could imagine a five-time men's champ being on a smaller court, Williams replied: "I haven't seen that in the scheduling yet." Tennis FROM PAGE 1 things that that car didn't have," he said. "We as- sumed, hey, it was doing so well, why wouldn't it keep going? It seems like over the offseason there's so much improvement and gains made by every orga- nization that you can't af- ford to rest on what you did the year before." While it's true that a driver is only as good as his car, Earnhardt has proved to excel at restrictor plate races. Of his 26 career Sprint Cup victories, Earn- hardt has won 10 times at Daytona and Talladega. He's the defending race winner here at Daytona, and he won an exhibition race in February. Counting non-points events, Earn- hardt has won 11 times at the famed speedway. He's done it with an ag- gressive driving style that he possibly inherited from his late father, Dale Earn- hardt, who won 13 points races at Daytona and Tal- ladega before he was killed on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. "You've got to get your- self out there and put your- self in some pretty compro- mising situations that are touch and go," Earnhardt said. "If you want to go up there and win the race, you've got to put yourself in some situations that are really sketchy. "Sometimes in plate rac- ing it's as hairy as you can stand. It's about as much excitement and nerve- wracking anxiety as you can stomach." Earnhardt will likely drive that way on Saturday night when he seeks his first victory of the season. He sits 12th in the stand- ings — only behind team- mate Chase Elliott among drivers inside the top 16 still looking for a win. But 12 drivers already have wins this season with 10 races remaining to set the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field. A win should essentially lock a driver into the Chase — unless there are more than 16 winners. So Earnhardt isn't very comfortable with his cur- rent position, especially since there have been eight different winners in the last eight races. He admit- ted being frustrated over his May races — he didn't have a finish higher than 14th — but is encouraged by what speed crew chief Greg Ives has seemed to find. "Where we are in points is very frustrating," he said. "It creates a lot of anxiety between me and Greg. I think that we both are not happy with where we are in the points. We are won- dering and worrying about trying to make the Chase — it shouldn't be some- thing that this team is con- cerned with. "I think we are way bet- ter than where we are." He lamented that suc- cess came easier in years past. He noted the num- ber of accidents he's been in is uncharacteristic but said his team is giving him good cars. "Hopefully, we just get to Richmond and we don't have a lot of pressure about trying to make the Chase," he said. "Hopefully, we can put a string of races to- gether that will give us a good cushion between us and the next guys fighting for those last few spots. Obviously, we need to get a win to put all that to bed, but nothing is guaranteed. If we don't get a win going into the Chase we are going to have to do well in these next 10 races and just be real consistent." NASCAR FROM PAGE 1 only one birdie attempt (he missed) in his first 10 holes. "I wasn't supposed to shoot 2 under today," Spi- eth said. U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson had a U.S. Open kind of round — 15 pars, two birdies and a bo- gey — for a 69. His big cele- bration was walking off the 11th green to learn that his alma mater, Coastal Caro- lina, had just won the Col- lege World Series for its first national title. His golf wasn't bad considering that he didn't practice much last week while celebrating his first major (and his 32nd birthday) in The Bahamas. "I didn't expect a whole lot today," Johnson said. "I always expect to play well, but this golf course is play- ing tough." Only 17 players of the 61- man field broke par. The first round ended with only 58 players. Daniel Berger withdrew after his opening tee shot with a shoulder injury. Brooks Koepka withdrew after 13 holes with an ankle injury. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III, playing at Firestone for the first time since 2009, withdrew after a 78 because of what was described as a torn labrum. The field also was miss- ing Rory McIlroy and Mas- ters champion Danny Wil- lett, among several Eu- ropean Tour players who opted to play the French Open this week. McGirt had never played in a WGC until he became eligible with his playoff vic- tory at Muirfield Village a month ago. He showed up at Firestone on Sunday, played nine holes and rode in a cart on the back nine. "I fell in love with the place because length is not everything out here," McGirt said. "You have to drive it in the fairway. You have to drive it in the cor- rect spots in the fairways to be able to attack pins. I love it because you can't stand up there and just hit it as hard as you want, go find it and hack it on the green. It's an old, tradi- tional style golf course, which I absolutely love. "I don't know, maybe it's something with Ohio I like," he added. The most peculiar round belonged to Spieth, who said he has been in a lull the last month as he searches for something in his swing, particularly his wedges. It had the look of a score closer to 74 or 75, ex- cept that the former Mas- ters and U.S. Open cham- pion kept hanging in there with pars. One shot hit a tree and bounced forward over the water into a bun- ker. He whiffed on a 7-iron that left him a tough pitch, but he managed to save par from 8 feet. He ended the front nine with par-saving putts from 20 feet and 25 feet. It took him until the 15th hole before he had back-to- back birdie putts, and he started converting them. He holed the last four of them. "I'm really just search- ing for something that isn't far off, that's real sim- ple," Spieth said. "It really is only taking place on my scoring clubs, but that's where you need them. It's close. It's almost there. And when it clicks, we're defi- nitely in business the way the short game is." Emiliano Grillo and Jimmy Walker also were at 67 with Day, while Spi- eth was joined by Rickie Fowler, Anirban Lahiri and Charley Hoffman.
