By George Dickie © Zap2it It doesn't take a lot of imagination to see that ABC's new summer music series "Greatest Hits" has serious DVD potential. After all, in each of the six hourlong episodes that begin rolling out Thursday, June 30, iconic musical artists are paired with cur- rent hitmakers to perform songs from different eras in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. So one night view- ers might be treated to a performance by Meghan Trainor and Backstreet Boys, while another night might bring together Pitbull and REO Speed- wagon. Overseeing this synergy of old and new is Arsenio Hall, the co-host of the show with country singer Kelsea Ballerini. He's no stranger to popular mu- sic, having helped launch more than a few acts on his 1989-94 Fox late-night series, among them Ma- riah Carey, Snoop Doggy Dogg and Boyz-II-Men. And for him, this assign- ment is a labor of love. "It's a lot of fun, man.," Hall says "I mean, I hope what's going on in this room transfers through the lens into the homes because it's crazy. And it bridges the generations so well ... ." And according to Hall, the pairings are organic. "Musicians want to 'musish,' " he explains, "and they want to jam and they have stuff in their head. When a musician says, 'Hey, I'd like to do a feature. I'd like to have that person on my album. I'd like to do a duet with that person,' they say it all the time but there's no vehicle for it. And some of them, you're surprised when you get the word in the morning producers meeting that Pitbull liked REO Speedwagon as a kid, and I'm like, 'Get the ... out of here. That could be so cool.' And so that's what we put together last night. We got them in studio." But bringing the artists together on the same day in the same city proved to be a logistical puzzle. Summer tours, recording schedules and other de- mands take priority, so getting, for instance, a Ze- ndaya and a Mario togeth- er for a few hours to do a duet was to say the least a challenge. But when things finally coalesce and everyone is clicking, the results, says Hall, make it all worth it. "It's kind of exciting to be a producer on this show because it's like try- ing to coach the Warriors," he says with a laugh. "It's like, 'I gotta adjust. I gotta make some changes.' ... You'll have these legend- ary situations that you're like, 'Oh, we're not going to get to do this because what they want to do, this person's not in.' And sometimes the puzzle's not working. But the great thing is we have to do six of them and six puzzles came together, you know, like times 10." Arsenio Hall is a co-host of "Greatest Hits," premiering Thursday on ABC.
