Obituaries Born in Carrington, North Dakota on December 28, 1918. Jim passed away peacefully on June 4, 2012 at the age of 93 with family by his side at Brentwood Skilled Nursing Facility in Red Bluff, CA. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy and his JAMES B. BALES son Robert (Teresa) Bales, 5 grandchildren, and numer- ous great grandchildren. Jim was predeceased in 2007 by his step daughter Jessie (Potter) Harvey. Jim lived and worked in the Corning area for most of his life as a heavy equipment operator and in the local olive industry. In his later years he was employed by the Corn- ing Elementary School District at Olive View School until his retirement. Jim enjoyed visiting with friends who stopped by to share a cold one while talking over old times. He could often be found mowing his orchard on the John Deere he loved to ride. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 16th at 11am at the First Presbyterian Church of Corning, locat- ed at 471 Marguerite Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Corning Christian Assistance or a charity of your choice. All arrangements will be handled through Hall Brothers Corning Mortuary. Les was born in Paradise, California on March 1, 1953, passed away from a heart attack on June 6, 2012. He moved to Red Bluff as a small child with his parents LESLIE VIRGIL THORNHILL from Stirling City when Diamond Match Lumber Mill opened. He went to local schools and graduated 8th grade from Antelope School where he worked as a custo- dian. He also graduated from Red Bluff High in 1972. Pri- or to being a custodian, (which I think was his favorite job of all) he worked at Diamond (Roseburg) for 17 years and Pactiv for 13 years. He loved to hunt, fish, camp and drink a beer (or three) with friends. He left behind his wife Pam of 33 years and their three children; son Scott Thornhill of Everett, Washington, son Brian Thornhill (Re- nee) of Red Bluff, Rebecca Gregg (Robert) of Red Bluff. He also leaves his grandchildren who were what made him smile, Aaron and Bree Thornhill (Scott's children), Haylie and Grayson (Brian's children) and Katie and Abby Gregg (Rebecca's children). Also left behind are his mother Donna Thornhill, his sister Ann Peterson, brothers John and Eddie Thornhill. He was preceded in death by his father Tinker Thornhill and his daughter Lindy Sue Thornhill. There will be a celebration of life at his home on June 23, 2012 at 3:00, bring your lawn chair and your favorite beverage and tell me stories about Les. We will always love him and miss him, he was the life of the party! Mahlon E. Hettick Mahlon E. Hettick of Red Bluff died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Community Hospital. He was 69. Jerry Brown as they chased a deadline this week to approve a budget that addresses Califor- nia's nearly $16 billion deficit. The leaders are at odds with the Democratic governor over $2 billion in cuts to welfare, in- home and child care and Cal Grants, but said they made progress in their talks. by his side on June 7th, 2012. His family moved to San Francisco early on and he graduated from Lowell HS in SF before being accepted to the University of California at Berkeley. What followed was a 58 year love affair with the University which saw him become Sophomore Class President, Ex- ecutive Vice President of the ASUC, Chair of the Memorial Union Advisory Board, member of the Order of the Gold- en Bear and Cal Club, a life-long member of Theta Delta Chi, and, after graduation in 1958, Assistant to Athletic Di- rector Pete Newell, and eventually Executive Director of the California Alumni Association. Over the years, he was a fixture at Cal sporting events and the Lair of the Golden Bear in Pinecrest, CA. As Permanent Secretary of the Class of 1958, he played a significant role in planning re- unions and contributing Class Notes for California Maga- zine, the Alumni Association's periodic publication. Scott's second love affair began on November 30th, 1963 when he married the former Gretchen Garrett Wetter of Red Bluff, CA. Their 48 ½ year odyssey carried them from the Bay Area, to Southern California, back to the Bay Area, and eventually home to Red Bluff. Scott's ca- reer spanned many different organizations but his heart was always in non-profits. Beyond working for the Uni- versity and the California Alumni Association, he served as Executive Director of the Life Underwriters and as Ex- ecutive Director of the Alta Bates Summit Foundation. Scott was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff and the Thursday Morning Breakfast Group. He was also heavily involved in tracking his (and any other family's) genealogy through the centuries! Scott is survived by his wife Gretchen, son and daughter-in-law, Ian and Pam Sherman of Roseville, CA, grandchildren Jackson (14) and Josie (12) of Roseville; daughter and son-in-law Heather and Ron Tapia of Anti- och, CA, grandchildren Garrett (9) and Reese (5) of Anti- och, CA; sister Sandy Tatti of Jerome, ID, sister Linda Sherman of Modesto, CA, brother-in-law John Birnie of Salem, OR; niece Allison Birnie of Pasadena, CA, nephew Matt Birnie of Crested Butte, CO, and nephew Steven Birnie of Jerome, ID. Lungs found on LA sidewalk LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say something that looks like lungs have been found on a sidewalk in south Los Angeles County. Sheriff's Sgt. Robert Dean tells the Los Angeles Times that a citizen called Sunday evening to report organs on the sidewalk on Avalon Boulevard in an unin- corporated area. He says he doesn't know what they are but deputies turned them over to coroner's officials.
