2A Daily News – Tuesday, June 12, 2012 Community people&events Emblem president to visit Yvonne Fiori of Porterville, newly-elected president of the California-Nevada-Hawaii State Association of Emblem Clubs, will pay her official visit to the Red Bluff Emblem club on Friday, June 15. The dinner meeting will be at 6 p.m. at the Red Bluff Elks Lodge. Leah Shiers of Porterville, state marshal, and other state and district officers are expected to accompany her, includ- ing Jeannie Garton of Red Bluff, assistant organist. The visit comes during Supreme Americanism Week, observed by Emblem clubs across the nation. The procla- mation was issued by Supreme President Donna Mazzola of West Newton, MA. In part, it encouraged strengthening the unity of the United States and restated the citizen principles: "We do pledge to bear true allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the flag which is the emblem of our country. The Supreme Emblem Club of the United States of American has adopted the flag as the emblem of our order and have adopted the name Emblem by which our organization is known throughout the land." The Supreme president encouraged clubs and individual members to perform patriotic deeds. The Red Bluff club opened the week carrying American flags from Colonial times to the present at the Red Bluff Elks Flag Day observance on June 10. They also provided refreshments. Modern Cleaners You Matter On Memorial Day they served cookies at the Northern California State Veterans Cemetery in Igo, as they have since the cemetery was established. This year they also provided sandwiches for the California Conservation Corps members who set up the grounds for the ceremony. Elks Lodge mem- bers assisted. It is rare that a business is put on my heart to be reminded that they matter. I imagine it makes sense in that people are who matter and businesses are filled with peo- ple who are there for other people to utilize their goods and services. I can't remember a time when Modern Cleaners wasn't in its cur- rent location. When I think about it they have cleaned decades worth of clothing and home goods for myself and probably most everyone in town. There aren't that many busi- nesses that have been able to have that sort of staying power. Walking into Modern Cleaners you get a snap shot of life in Red Bluff. Racks of starched cowboy shirts and Wranglers. Sheriff, RBPD and Highway Patrol uni- forms. Wedding dresses and formal gowns. The occasional sleeping bag or formal living room curtains, all safe beneath their soft plastic sheet- ing waiting to be reused and returned for another round of beau- tifying. I have only written one other I started using the cleaners a bit more recently and I noticed some- thing that really makes them stand out. No matter how busy, humid, overrun with customers or orders, they are always kind and up beat. I have yet to be in there when they aren't friendly and interested in the stains that make their way onto my clothes. Last week was no exception. I had taken My daughter shopping for an outfit for high school grad- uation. She found a dress she loved but the only one in her size had make up on it. I took the dress to Mod- ern Cleaners and they not only got the stain out, they did it with two days notice. They didn't make me feel bad that I needed the outfit so quickly, if anything they seemed excited to be an important factor in her graduation being successful. Is it our dirty nature that keeps Modern Cleaners around? Is it our piles of laundry that provide their job security? We demand that Wranglers need a George Strait crease down the middle and they supply perfectly stiffened legs? Do we show more respect to officers who have perfectly pressed shirts as Faydra Rector You Matter they hand us a citation? Does our ownership of non-laundrable fab- rics create a niche that only they can fill? I think it is more than that. Modern Cleaners you matter because it is your people and their attitude that set you apart. Your service is excellent, but the way you deliver it is exceptional. It does not go unnoticed that you are consistently kind to your customers, you are con- sistently positive about what you can do for them and you are consis- tently proving again and again that having a qual- ity business is about quality ser- vice. County Is Not Able To Take Over Fair Now Tehama county, it develops, may not be able to take over the county fair this year. The supervisors have told stockholders of the fair association that county funds will not likely be available for this purpose for several months at least, and maybe not until 1923. — June 12, 1922 The PAL Martial Arts Center for Excellence, has introduced a new diploma to the program. The same belts are used but there is a little difference in them, too. Most martial arts taught in the west today use a kyu/dan ("kew/dahn") system to rank/grade their students. Kyu translates to "class" (under black belt) and dan to "grade" (black belt and above). This system was brought into existence about one-hundred years ago by the Founder of Judo, Jigaro Kano, a Japanese Jujutsu Master. All other systems in use today use a similar sys- tem. PAL Martial Arts is a member of "Edo Machi- kata Taiho-Jutsu" founded by Dr. Don Cunningham. Dr. Cunningham has writ- ten several books on ancient Japanese Martial Arts and weapons. PAL's modern version of these arts deal with defending against bullies. Prior to the kyu/dan system there was the Menkyo ("mehn-kee-yo" - Licensing) system. The grading officials had to be pleased with how the student pro- gressed over the many years of practicing their arts which almost always included citizenship, music, poetry and com- munication skills in addi- tion to the martial arts they learned and eventual- ly mastered. Learning was life-long, masters never quit. Chaos Vierra and Jacob McMannus have been students in the pro- gram for nearly five years each and have reached the Menkyo grade of Komono ("koh-moh- noh"), which is the level just below Doshin, ("doh- sheen"), equivalent to black belt grading. The PAL dojo sys- tem still includes white, blue and green belts but students won't receive an official Okippiki Diploma until they receive their first brown belt with a yellow stripe. Soon, sev- eral students will be pro- moted to Okippiki (brown belt with yellow stripe). When they receive the Komono Diploma the yel- low stripe will be replaced with a green one. Once a student attains black belt grading they will receive their Doshin Certificate - and will be authorized to teach the system they have learned over a period of more than three years with at least 70 percent attendance.
