There will be informa- tion about the new compet- itive scholarship program that is being offered for new students in grades 5-8. The regular enrollment period is open for K-8 stu- dents for the fall until the end of June. On Thursday, June 30 there will be another in- formational meeting at the school, 12245 Willard Road. School to hold informational meetings WHITTENBERG By Jennifer Cooper SocialSecuritymanager, Redding Every year, June marks the beginning of two busy seasons: summer and "wed- ding season." With joyful expecta- tion, many of us have al- ready marked our calen- dars and started wrap- ping up our plans for the vacations, ceremonies, and honeymoons. While the betrothed work out the details, So- cial Security wants to re- mind them about one de- tail that's extremely impor- tant: the "record" Social Security keeps of your life's earnings. For many people, a wed- ding often means a name change is in order. If you are legally chang- ing your name, you need to apply for a replacement So- cial Security card reflecting your new name. If you're working, also tell your em- ployer. That way, Social Secu- rity can keep track of your earnings history as you go about living your wonderful new life. If you have reported in- come under your former or maiden name, and didn't inform us of a change, we might not have received an accurate W-2 and your earnings may have been re- corded incorrectly. This is easier to fix now — when you first change your name — than years from now when you re- tire, when it may cause delays in receiving your benefits. This is important be- cause we base your future benefits on your earnings record. So, visit our web- site at www.socialsecurity. gov/ssnumber, or call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800- 325-0778), to find out what specific documents you need to change your name and to apply for a replace- ment card. Last year, the Supreme Court issued a decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, hold- ing that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry regardless of where they live within the United States. As a result, Social Secu- rity recognizes more same- sex couples as married for purposes of determining entitlement to Social Secu- rity benefits or eligibility for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. We recently updated in- structions for employees to process claims and ap- peals when a determina- tion of marital status is necessary. With these changing rules, we encourage any- one who believes they may be eligible for benefits to apply now. You can learn more about our policies for same-sex couples at www. ssa.gov/people/same-sex- couples. After the honeymoon, you can focus on your ca- reer or starting a family, moving to a new home, and securing a well-deserved re- tirement. Now, you're all set. Let the celebrations begin. SOCIAL SECURITY Getting married soon? Record your new name DEAR MARY: How can I fix carpet that has bleach spots on it? I tried us- ing a fabric pen that's about the same color as the tan carpet, but the spots turned or- ange! — Carol DEAR CAROL: Bleach is a done deal. There is no way to un-bleach those spots. If you have a piece of spare carpet leftover from when the carpet was installed, you can cut out the patch of stained car- pet and replace it with a new one. If you don't have a spare patch, cut a patch of carpet out of an inconspicu- ous area, like the back of the closet. Stick dou- ble-sided carpet tape on the floor and press the patch down onto the tape to put it in place. Because carpet has nap, or pile, if the repair job is done well, the patch will be seamless and totally undetectable. If you are uncomfort- able doing this yourself, call a local carpet re- pair expert. It shouldn't be costly if you have the carpet piece ready to go. Good luck! DEAR MARY: I can't afford to replace my 50- year old light oak cup- boards. They are still in good condition, but they look dull. Can you rec- ommend a product that will clean and/or revital- ize them? I have Cosmas hardware, which you rec- ommended, and I love it. (Cosmas has a great Oil Rubbed Bronze Cabinet Round Knob for as little a $1.15 per knob in a pack of 25.) Thank you for all the products and tips you share with us. — Judy DEAR JUDY: I think you will be thrilled to pieces once you deep clean your cabinets with Howard Feed-N-Wax Or- ange Oil Wood Polish & Conditioner (about $8 for 16 ounces). Even if it took two or three bot- tles of this really amaz- ing product to deep clean, your cabinets would shine like a new penny! This wood-clean- ing product is also a conditioner. It contains beeswax and orange oil, a mixture that replen- ishes the oils in finished and oiled wood. I predict that putting Howard Feed-N-Wax and Cosmas Hardware together will to create a "WOW" fac- tor in your kitchen. DEAR MARY: Can you address direct-market- ing companies? I feel like so many women are suck- ered into the scheme at marketing parties. It's a scam of extraordinarily high prices and peer pres- sure to buy, buy, buy. Thanks. — Sophie DEAR SOPHIE: I have been involved with no fewer than five multi- level marketing compa- nies, and each time it was for one reason: to get rich quick. That was always the promise, and I fell for it five different times! Every time I lost my initial investment, and so much more time and money, trying to make it work. Needless to say, I, too, am not a fan of the MLM business model. I find it unfair to customers be- cause the clothes, vita- mins, essential oils, plas- ticware, stoneware, can- dles, scrapbooks, etc. are very expensive. It's unfair to the distributors who make up the company sales force because they have no protected terri- tories and compete for the same customers. But the worst part for me is the way distributors are trained to identify friends and relatives as building blocks to help them cre- ate a stairway to the top. As for a kind, yet hon- est response to party invi- tations and the proposed "opportunity to get in on the ground level," here is my best advice: Respond immediately. Respond in the same manner as you were in- vited. If it was a written invitation, write your re- sponse and mail it. If it was an email invitation, reply by email. If some- one left you a voicemail, call that person back and leave a voicemail (use Slydial, a free voice- messaging service that sends your call straight to voicemail). If the invi- tation came via Facebook or Evite, respond accord- ingly. Thank this friend for thinking of you, and tell them that you don't at- tend those kinds of par- ties, but instead suggest that you two get together for coffee sometime and catch up. That is an hon- est, sincere response. Would you like to send a tip to Mary? You can email her at mary@ everydaycheapskate. com, or write to Everyday Cheapskate, 12340 Seal Beach Blvd., Ste. B-416, Seal Beach, CA 90740. EVERYDAY CHEAPSKATE Can't remove a stain from your carpet? Cut it out Mary Hunt If you, a friend or a loved one has Original Medicare and uses diabe- tes testing supplies, you should know that Medi- care is continuing its Na- tional Mail-Order Pro- gram that helps you get quality supplies while saving money. This program includes all parts of the U. S., in- cluding the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Sa- moa. Under the program, you need to use a na- tional mail-order con- tract supplier for Medi- care to pay for diabetes testing supplies that are delivered to your home. If you've been getting your diabetes testing sup- plies through the mail and would like to con- tinue to do so, you may need to choose a new sup- plier starting July 1. If you don't want di- abetes testing supplies delivered to your home, you can go to any local store (pharmacy or store- front supplier) that's en- rolled with Medicare and get your diabetes testing supplies there. National mail-order contract suppliers can't charge you more than any unmet deductible and 20% coinsurance. Local stores also can't charge more than any un- met deductible and 20% coinsurance if they ac- cept assignment, which means the Medicare-ap- proved amount as pay- ment in full. Local stores that don't accept Medi- care assignment may charge you more than 20% coinsurance and any unmet deductible. If you get your diabe- tes testing supplies from a local store, check with the store to find out how much you'll pay. You have certain pro- tections when using a national mail-order con- tract supplier. National mail-order contract suppliers must make the same items and services available to peo- ple with Medicare that they make available to people without Medicare, make sure you get a par- ticular brand of diabetes testing supplies when a doctor or other health care provider prescribes a particular brand to avoid an adverse medical out- come and never influence or try to convince you to switch your current glu- cose monitor and testing supplies brand to another brand. To find a list of national mail-order contract sup- pliers online, visit Medi- care.gov/supplier, enter your ZIP code, and click "Go." Select "Mail-Order Diabetic Supplies" in the Competitive Bid Catego- ries section, and click the green "Search" button at the bottom of the page. You can also get a list of national mail-order contract suppliers by call- ing 1-800-MEDICARE (1- 800-633-4227). TTY us- ers should call 1-877-486- 2048. If you have questions or want more informa- tion, Medicare has re- sources to help you un- derstand the program, in- cluding Medicare.gov and 1-800-MEDICARE. Medi- care Advantage Plans like HMOs or PPOs will no- tify you if your supplier is changing. Contact the plan for more informa- tion.
