The North's size made passing dangerous and nearly every Campbell or Bustamante pass was knocked away or inter- cepted. Late in the game, House broke free and sprinted 50 yards to the North 16 yard line giving the South a chance to avoid the shutout. The threat ended, though, with an interception that was returned for a North touchdown inside the final minute. The North's quarter- back, Big Valley's Kellen Gerig, was a one-man high- light reel most of the even- ing, runningandpassingfor multiple scores. Starting this year the Li- ons are no longer naming a most valuable player, in- stead awarding a player of the week honor for each team. Winter was named player of the week for the South. LocalplayersontheSouth team were Mercy's Teddy Ranberg,House,ParkerWil- son, Travis Gorden, Borges and Baer and Los Molinos' Jared Costa and Winter. Mercy'sBrianMedeiroswas the head coach. Schools represented by the south included Mercy, Los Molinos, Greenville, Princeton, Loyalton, Elk Creek and Greenville. North schools included Tulelake, Redding Chris- tian, Butte Valley, Big Val- ley, Hayfork and Happy Camp. Football FROM PAGE 1 ter, the North had held its counterpart to minus-1 yard rushing. Catanese completed his first seven passes. He was at home in the North of- fense installed by J.C. Hun- saker, his head coach at Shasta and also in charge of the winning side on Sat- urday. Catanese's night saw him complete 7 of 8 passes for 102 yards and the two TDs to Terras, the second of which was a 6-yarder with 5:43 left in the third quarter for a 24-6 margin. But the North kept add- ing on as the penalties piled high for the South. The South had nine in- fractions, the vast major- ity of them holding or per- sonal fouls, leaving drives in dire situations such as a fourth-and-54 from its 32- yard line late in the first half. "What we were going to do worked just fine. When it did work, it was taken away," said South coach Ryan Reynolds of Sutter. "You can't execute a game plan when you're going backwards — penalties ev- ery single play." If that wasn't enough, the North outscored the South 24-0 in the fourth quarter that began when Meridith kicked his second field goal with 10:04 left. "We didn't want to be the year to lose for the North. Winning this game just meant everything," Meridith said. After Duclos scored, the South ending up punt- ing on the ensuing posses- sion only to watch Grant Kingston run 57 yards for a one-play drive as he high- stepped his way into the end zone. The way the contest un- folded it prompted Cat- anese to exclaim in the fi- nal minutes while standing on the sideline: "Feels like the section championship game. Feels good to be on this side, though." That Northern Section final he referenced was the 49-7 thrashing Pleasant Valley put on Shasta as Vi- kings quarterback Brandt Hughes — Catanese's coun- terpart on Saturday as well — tied a singe-game record for the section by throwing for seven touchdowns. The South would have needed that many to keep up with the North on Sat- urday. The one full-fledged charge from the South came on the opening drive of the second half. Hughes hit Winters wideout Mor- gan Nicholas for 45 yards then found Cliff Jackson on the next play for a 24- yard TD reception to pull the North within 10-6 with 9:56 left in the third.
