Towering columns of smoke rose from the San Gabriel Mountains behind Los Angeles as the fires sev- eral miles apart devoured hundreds of acres of brush on steep slopes above foot- hill suburbs. Police in the city of Azusa ordered hun- dreds of homes evacuated. Helicopters sucked wa- ter out of a reservoir to drop on flames while air tankers bombarded the flanks of the fire with retardant. Officials had warned of extreme fire danger in the region as the heat wave peaked. Temperatures sur- passed 100 degrees across much of Southern Califor- nia well before noon, while some desert cities sizzled in the 120s. Elsewhere, crews made progress against a nearly week-old blaze in rugged coastal mountains west of Santa Barbara, where over- night winds had pushed flames into previously burned areas, allowing firefighters to boost con- tainment to more than 50 percent. But 270 homes and other buildings still were threat- ened by the blaze, which has charred more than 12 square miles since Wednes- day. Another wildfire was growing near a small des- ert town close to the Mex- ico border. It surged to nearly 3 square miles amid triple-digit temperatures and forced the evacuation of about 75 people from Potrero, a ranching com- munity a few miles north of Tecate, Mexico, and about 40 miles southeast of San Diego. Three firefighters suf- fered heat-related injuries and were taken to a hospi- tal for evaluations. "We're expecting to have pretty significant fire activ- ity today," said Capt. Kendal E. By Lindsey Bahr and Tom Krisher The Associated Press LOS ANGELES The SUV that rolled down a drive- way and killed "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin was being recalled because the gear shifters have confused drivers, causing the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly, government records show. Yelchin, 27, a rising ac- tor best known for playing Chekov in the rebooted se- ries, died Sunday after his 2015 Jeep Grand Chero- kee pinned him against a mailbox pillar and security fence at his home, Los An- geles police said. The 2015 model-year Grand Cherokees were part of a global recall of 1.1 mil- lion vehicles announced by automaker Fiat Chrysler in April, National Highway Traffic Safety Administra- tion records show. The agency urged the re- call because of complaints from drivers who had trou- ble telling if they had put the automatic transmis- sions in park. If they were not in park and a driver left the vehicle, it could roll away. Fiat Chrysler expected to send recall notification letters to owners on May 16, according to a memo to dealers, but it's not known whether Yelchin received or saw his letter. The com- pany is working on a fix and expects to have a software update ready in July or Au- gust. Investigators were look- ing into the position of Yelchin's gear shift at the time of the accident, Offi- cer Jane Kim said. The ac- tor had gotten out of the ve- hicle momentarily, but po- lice didn't say why he was behind it when it started rolling.
