ByPatriciaMartin Sometimestheweather report calls for wind, rain, possible hail, thunder and lightning, but yet when I look out my window the sky is clear and only a soft breeze is evident. Just in case, when I go out, I take my umbrella along. I know how fast things can change. It's like that in my life too. And, since God does not play favor- ites, it is like that in all of our lives. Everything can be going along smoothly with no storms of life, and suddenly, I find myself in deep floodwaters. The storms of life are pelting my "umbrella" furiously, and I'm holding on for dear life to the handle. At such times I can still choose to praise God, for He is my Ultimate Um- brella. He is my covering, and I compare the han- dle of my umbrella to the Word of God. I've learned to take a tight grip, and not to loosen my hold, for my very life and survival depend upon God's Word. Remember David? He was a man after God's own heart. (See Acts 13:22) King David was not with- out storms in his life. Even though he sinned and failed God, he repented (fully), and he desired to please God in every way. David had to run for his life, when King Saul was attempting to kill him. I call that quite a storm. Yet, God's hand was upon David, and He protected him. David's trust remained steady in God, and even though I doubt David thought about God's protection as an umbrella covering, the divine protection was ev- ident. Just as evident was David's repeated choice to worship God in the midst of the storm. Daniel and his friends possessed hearts that re- fused to compromise. They did not fear the ways of man, but placed their lives into God's hands. Built within their hearts was a trust for God's pro- tection. Being in the li- on's den, or the possibility of frying in a fire, did not dampen their courage and hope. God prevailed and miracles took place. In studying the book of Dan- iel we can obtain fresh truth and understanding of what it means to live a life of hope and trust. I sometimes find my- self in dark valleys of deci- sion. Do you? Here again, without God's covering, and without my "handle," I would surely falter. But I've not left my umbrella behind. I've made prepara- tion for the storm. "I have hidden Your Word in my heart, that I might not sin against You" (Psalm 119:11 NLT). The storms of life are often eerie and darkness seems to enfold us. I recall a promise of God about that. "Oh Lord, You are my lamp. The Lord lights up my darkness" (2 Sam- uel 22:29 — NLT). There is always that beautiful rainbow at the end of the storm. The promise is real. All of the promises of God can be ours if we re- ceive them as our own. Those precious prom- ises of God sustain us, and bring us safely to the other side of the storm. So, we can sail on knowing no storm can sink us while we recognize that Jesus is in the boat with us. Remember, Christ Je- sus is the great storm calmer. He will speak, and the raging storm will end. Have faith in God. When Jesus said, "Peace, be still," the storm obeyed, the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. (See Mark 4:39) Be en- couraged, for our Lord is master over any storm that touches the life of one of His kids. Sometimes a spiritual type of fog can settle over the very heart of a believer in Jesus, and during those times our view of God's promises may seem a bit dim. Nothing removes a fog like the sunshine fil- tering through the mist. Nothing lifts us above the darkness of a spiritual fog like the light shining into our heart and soul pro- vided by the Living Word of God! Jesus is that light. Jesus made this very clear when he declared this truth: "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in dark- ness, but have the light of life" (John 8:12). The secret of victory for all of us begins with com- ing to know Jesus, the Son of God, for He is the one who provides the light during any storm of life. Sometimes we just need to be reminded, so that the "Sonshine" will lift a weary soul up again, and renew the joy of the Lord in the daily walk with God. Jesus rules over all storms. Now that's good news. PatriciaMartinisa seasoned intercessor who leads the Jehovah Rapha Ministry of prayer and healing in Red Bluff. She was herself healed of cancer some years back. GOD TALK Being prepared for the storm ahead By Travis Loller The Associated Press NASHVILLE, TENN. The Southern Baptist Conven- tion has been closely associ- ated with conservative pol- itics for years, but at its an- nual meeting this week the nation's largest Protestant denomination showed that its concerns are becoming more diverse along with its membership. Where 20 years ago the convention voted to boy- cott Disney for promoting homosexuality, on Tues- day, delegates passed a res- olution extending love and compassion to the victims of the recent shooting at an Orlando gay night club. The resolution also asked South- ern Baptists to donate blood and offer other forms of sup- port. Southern Baptists haven't changed their belief that sexual relations between same-sex couples are sinful, but it is no longer acceptable to denounce gay people. And many Southern Baptist pas- tors say they have gay cou- ples in their congregations. Although abortion is still a huge concern, this week racismwascondemnedwith equal fervor. On Tuesday, delegates voted to repudiate the display of the Confeder- ate battle flag. And they ac- tually voted to strengthen the language of the resolu- tion presented to them by a committee, deleting a sen- tence that said the flag is seen by some as a memorial to their ancestors. That stance earned them a barrage of angry, racist comments on Twitter. Later African-American Rev. K. Marshall Williams said during a panel on the church and politics that Christians need to pray not only for issues like abortion and marriage, but for an end to the school-to-prison pipe- line that affects many young black men. Morethan7,000delegates attended the two-day meet- ing in St. Louis of the Nash- ville-based denomination. They included people like Jamal Bishara, pastor of the First Arabic Baptist Church in Arizona. He stood to op- pose a resolution in sup- port of Israel that criticized the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement. His speech was applauded, although the resolution passed. During the eight years that George W. Bush was president, he addressed the annual meeting at least four times. Today, Southern Baptist ethics leader Russell Moore regularly denounces presumed Republican pres- idential nominee Donald Trump as lacking Christian values. While Trump has advo- cated a ban on Muslims be- ing admitted to the United States, Southern Baptists on Wednesday passed a resolu- tion encouraging Southern Baptist churches and fam- ilies to welcome and adopt refugees into their churches and homes. Moore, who recently added the SBC's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commis- sion to a list of groups sup- porting the construction of a New Jersey mosque, was challenged by a pastor who asked how he could support the rights of Muslims who he said are threatening the existence of Christians and Americans.
