MISSOURIGAMMA PAGE 3 ANSWERING THE CALL Casey Zimmerman '14 Begins His Next Journey in Seminary D uring his time in Rolla, Casey Zimmerman '14 always felt the push to be a part of something bigger. After receiving the Balanced Man Scholarship, there was something about SigEp that stood out to him. At the dinner, the brothers were welcoming and inclusive, and Casey decided to join the following semester. His father was a member of the Kansas Zeta Chapter at Fort Hays State University. "I am social by nature, and it was hard to find men in the dorms that shared similar interests," Casey says. "When I listened to my dad talk about his SigEp experiences, I knew I wanted something similar." MO Gamma gave Casey the right avenue to develop as a balanced man. He was able to grow to understand self-image—what he portrays to others and how he views himself. Casey says that SigEp was a gateway to get involved inside and outside the fraternity. "I got involved around campus and with other organizations," he says. "There you really learn to act as a professional and learn to network with others around you." Even as an alumnus, Casey is still looking for new ways to challenge himself and continue to grow. In August, he will answer a call to join the priesthood at Conception Seminary College in Conception, Missouri. "I always have been active with my faith and church," Casey says. "From being a small child and even through high school, I realized that if my faith means this much to me, then I should do it. SigEp always encourages you to be the best version of yourself and not to conform to a preconceived notion. I have the next six years to figure out if it's God's plan for me, but a lot of the experiences I had in the fraternity were integral for my next steps." Casey may have a few months before he begins his next journey, but he is eager to see what the future holds. "I am excited to be in an environment where I am being challenged, mentally and spiritually, and to continue to grow in my faith," he says. Casey lives in Rolla with six of his MO Gamma brothers. Since September, he has been a member of the alumni board. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, reading, singing in his church's choir, playing in a sports league, and he is a volunteer fire fighter. Casey can be reached at cjzq62@mst.edu. Building leadeRs, seRving The communiTy Undergraduates Complete 2,017 Service Hours, Raise $4,500 for St. Jude I t has been a fantastic year for MO Gamma, and we are proud of all we have accomplished. Congratulations to our graduating seniors! We will miss them, but we are also excited to welcome the newest members into our brotherhood. This semester, the Chapter racked up 2,017 hours of service. This was an average of 20.6 hours per member. Service is one of the utmost important aspects of our fraternity. We find it important to give back to the community as it has supported us for a long time. We hope to continue to have a huge influence on the community, as it will continue to have an influence on us. We also completed several service projects, including dog walking, clearing state park trails, and helping clean trails at Great Circle's Meramec Ranch. At the beginning of the semester, many brothers participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. service day, which was organized by the university. Our Chapter had the highest participation rate of any organization on campus. We were also featured in the Missouri S&T volunteerism and civic engagement newsletter in February. MO Gamma won the annual St. Jude Out 'til Midnight competition among campus organizations and raised the most money per active member. We raised nearly $4,500. We were also awarded the GAMMA risk management spotlight award. This award is for excellence in risk management and leadership. In June, I will attend the 2016 Ruck Leadership Institute, an intense five-day event for SigEp's top rising leaders. The fraternity's best and brightest will gather June 15-19 in Richmond, Virginia, for a program focused on personal leadership skills and the Balanced Man Ideal. Prominent SigEp alumni serve as mentors and guide Ruck scholars through competitive challenges and lessons in leadership. Participants are stretched both mentally and physically, and pushed to explore their potential. The result is that Ruck scholars learn about their leadership styles and how to apply them to different situations. The scholars all return to their campuses ready to utilize their new skills.
