Beginning Teacher of the Month Beginning Teacher of the Month
Congratulations to
Denise Carter
Beginning Teacher of the Month
for Cumberland County Schools
February's Beginning Teacher of
the Month is Denise Carter, a U. S.
History teacher at Gray's Creek High
School. She is in her second year of
teaching, but has worked in schools
for many years. Denise brings an
energy and enthusiasm to the class-
room that is positively contagious.
She makes learning fun and convinc-
es every child that they are impor-
tant. From interactive notebooks to
World War II foxhole re-enactments,
Denise makes history come alive for
her students.
When asked what factors infl u-
enced her decision to become a
teacher, she responded, "Love of older children. I am more patient with
older children. Having never had children of my own, I relate better to the
older ones."
She stated that her goal in becoming a teacher was to change one child's
life, "If I can take one child who has had a rough life and teach them char-
acter, responsibility, and patriotism; holding the beliefs of the founding fa-
thers, this is my goal."
When asked what she likes best about teaching, she smiled and said, "I
love my babies. It has taken me this long to fi nd my niche, and I found it.
This is where Gods wants me to be. This is my mission."
Denise Carter was raised in Beaver Falls, PA and has lived the past 30
years in North Carolina. She was employed for 15 years at Cape Fear High
School as a teacher assistant, dedicated to working with at-risk students.
When her fi rst husband passed away, she decided
to go back to school at Fayetteville State to earn
her bachelor's degree in history. She says it took
her 10 years to complete the degree as a part time
student working full time.
