ByJillLawless The Associated Press LONDON Former Brit- ish Prime Minister Gor- don Brown made an im- passioned call Monday for Labour Party supporters to vote to stay in the European Union, amid nervousness in the "remain" camp that it is losing momentum ahead of next week's referendum. Brown, who governed from 2007 to 2010, says Britain should "lead in Eu- rope" and not leave it. His speech on the EU, due later Monday, is considered sig- nificant because Brown's last-minute intervention during the 2014 Scottish independence referendum is credited with bolstering support for remaining part of the United Kingdom. Polls suggest the June 23 vote on whether to leave the 28-nation bloc could go either way. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has long criticized the EU, and some Labour members feel Cor- byn has not made a strong case for staying in the bloc. That has made Conserva- tive Prime Minister Da- vid Cameron by far the most vocal proponent of a "remain" vote — and left many Labour voters con- fused about where their party stands. With just 10 days to go until the vote, senior La- bour figures are stepping up their campaigning. Labour's foreign affairs spokesman, Hilary Benn, said in a speech Monday that Britain has "always looked beyond our own shores and engaged with the wider world," and ar- gued that leaving the EU "would make us a poorer Britain. A lesser Britain. A less influential Britain." By Bassem Mroue The Associated Press REYHANLI, TURKEY The Islamic State group, which on Monday called the Orlando mass shooter Omar Mateen 'one of the soldiers of the caliphate in America,' has a history of targeting gays with brutal public killings. Many Muslims consider homosexuality to be sin- ful. In some parts of the Arab world, homosexu- als have been arrested and sentenced to prison on charges linked to "de- bauchery." In Iran and Saudi Arabia, they have been lashed. Many other religions frown on homo- sexuality. The Islamic State group has reserved one of its most gruesome methods of killing for suspected gays — throwing them to their death from building rooftops. The Associated Press is reproducing an article on IS treatment of gays that initially ran on Dec. 2 and was part of a 2015 AP se- ries of stories, "Inside the Caliphate," which ex- plored life under Islamic State rule. Before a crowd of men on a street in the Syr- ian city of Palmyra, the masked Islamic State group judge read out the sentence against the two men convicted of homo- sexuality: They would be thrown to their deaths from the roof of the nearby Wael Hotel. He asked one of the men if he was satisfied with the sentence. Death, the judge told him, would help cleanse him of his sin. "I'd prefer it if you shoot me in the head," 32-year-old Hawas Mal- lah replied helplessly. The second man, 21-year- old Mohammed Salameh, pleaded for a chance to repent, promising never to have sex with a man again, according to a wit- ness among the onlookers that sunny July morning who gave The Associated Press a rare firsthand ac- count.
