Add a Petfinder or Adopt-a-Pet widget or banner to your web- site or blog if you have one. Share cat-care arti- cles on your sites to assist potential adopters. Last, but not least, discuss and emphasize the impor- tance of spaying/neuter- ing pets. Want to help our lo- cal shelter offset some of the costs of caring for so many? You could place a jar with a pic- ture of one of the shel- ter cats on your desk at work and ask for sponsor- ship donations. Sponsor- ing a spay or neuter pro- cedure will help lower the animal's adoption fee and, again, increase its chances for adoption into a warm, caring home. If you have the time and energy, take the action one step further and or- ganize a donation drive, bake sale, raffle, or other fundraising event. Any- thing raised can be des- ignated for specific uses, like purchasing scratch- ing pads for the cats, which are special extras this county's budget does not cover. It is a myth that cats are solitary creatures. Those of us who live with them know they like the company of both humans and other cats. There- fore, if you have a one- cat household, consider adopting another. If you do not have any, consider adopting two! In addi- tion, a result of kitten season is that other cats are often overlooked. So, please consider adopt- ing ones that might have more difficulty finding a home like: black cats, se- nior cats or even those with treatable chronic conditions like diabe- tes or blindness. Rescues, shelters and private individuals of- ten post on social me- dia about cats needing homes. So, why not do a little pet-working of your own and check out differ- ent pages for organiza- tions in your area. Also, talk to family, friends and co-workers, and see if any of them are look- ing for a cat. It's a great month to Adopt-A-Cat.
