Ontheair The Penguins are 5-1 in this year's playoffs after a loss, with goalie Matt Mur- ray owning a 5-0 record, which includes his 23-save performance in Game 4 of the Cup final for a 3-1 Pitts- burgh win. The one time Pitts- burgh lost back-to-back games in the postseason was games 4 and 5 of the Eastern Conference Fi- nal against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Murray was in net for the 4-3 loss in Game 4 and Marc-Andre Fleury started Game 5, a 4-3 over- time loss. "We'll be better because we know they'll be better," Sharks defenseman Marc- Edouard Vlasic said after Thursday's game. "We have to bring a better effort than we did tonight." The Penguins didn't like the end result of Game 5, but they weren't upset with how they played, particu- larly after the first three minutes when the Sharks had a 2-0 lead on goals by Brent Burns and Logan Couture. The Penguins came right back with goals by Evgeni Malkin on the power play and an even strength goal by Carl Hagelin to tie the game just 5:06 into the first. According to statistics kept on war-on-ice.com, Pittsburghhad19high-dan- ger scoring chances for the game to the Sharks' seven. One of those came in the second period, when Jones robbed Penguins center Nick Bonino, sticking his left pad to get a piece of the shot that seemed labeled for the bottom corner. "We have to do a bet- ter job in the neutral zone, slowing them down," Sharks defenseman Justin Braun said Thursday. "We were getting a little tired in the D zone. Guys are get- ting on the wrong side of us a few times on rebounds. Joner bailed us out a few times. I know Bonino got on the wrong side, had a pretty good chance and Joner kicked his leg out. "We have to do a better job boxing those guys out and taking those chances away." The Sharks gave up the power play goal to Mal- kin, but might have been a bit fortunate the Penguins didn't get two goals with the man advantage. With Burns in the box for high sticking Brian Du- moulin 8:08 into the first period, Chris Kunitz hit the post on a snap shot. Later, Phil Kessel hit both posts, as his shot from inside the circle to the right of Jones glanced off on post, danced on the goal line for a split second before it went off the other post and out of harms way. The Sharks haven't had to kill a ton of penalties over the course of the se- ries, just 11 in five games, but the Penguins' power play seems to be getting a bit more efficient with each game. In games after a loss, the Penguins have five power play goals. "I think our penalty killing has to be a little tighter," DeBoer said. "We were very good early in the series. I thought last night we were a little off, a lot like our defensive game in our own end a little bit." Sharks FROM PAGE 1 league's growth. "When Gordie came into the NHL, hockey was a Ca- nadian game. He converted it into a North American game," former NHL Pres- ident Clarence Campbell said when Howe retired the first time in 1971 because he was playing with arthri- tis in his left wrist and for a last-place team. With finesse and a heavy dose of grit, the Hockey Hall of Famer set NHL re- cords with 801 goals and 1,850 points — mostly with the Red Wings — that held up until Wayne Gretzky came along. The Great One himself left no doubt about what he thought of Howe. "Unfortunately we lost the greatest hockey player ever today, but more im- portantly the nicest man I have ever met," Gretzky tweeted. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman lauded "the incomparable" Howe as a remarkable athlete with in- credible longevity. "Gordie's commitment to winning was matched only by his commitment to his teammates, to his friends, to the Red Wings, to the city of Detroit and — above all — to his family," Bettman said. Mr. Hockey was a giant of the game and no list of the NHL's greatest players has him anywhere but near the top alongside players like Bobby Orr, Maurice Richard, Mario Lemieux, Guy Lafleur, Bobby Hull and Gretzky. Like few oth- ers, Howe's impact on the game stretched over de- cades. Howe was also so tal- ented and tough that a "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" became synonymous with the combination of having a goal, an assist and a fight in one game. Besides the four Cups, the talented right winger won six Hart Trophies as NHL MVP and six Art Ross Trophies as the league's top scorer. Howe began playing for the Red Wings in 1946, leading them to seven straight first-place finishes in the regular sea- son. He was a part of what was known as "The Pro- duction Line" with fellow future Hall of Famers Ted Lindsay and Sid Abel dur- ing his 25-year run with the franchise. "No one in their right mind ever wanted to tan- gle with him," Lindsay has said. "Gordie had a lethal pair of elbows, was strong as a moose and knew ev- ery angle." Howe handled his busi- ness with his elbows and fists almost as often as he did with wrist and slap shots. He ranked among the NHL leaders in pen- alty minutes three times, spending 100-plus minutes in the penalty box during those seasons. When he resumed playing as a par- ent with sons on the same sheet of ice, opponents of- ten found out not to mess with his boys. "If I can skate, I'll get even," Howe once said. Howe needed more than 400 stitches to close cuts, lost several teeth, broke ribs and his nose. He had a serious head injury in 1950. Howe FROM PAGE 1 to become the 12th horse to take the Preakness and Belmont after falling short in the Derby, and first since Afleet Alex in 2005. A win and Exaggerator would join a select group of Derby runners-up who went on and won the Preak- ness and Belmont, the last being Nashua in 1955. The others were Native Dancer (1953), Capot (1949) and Bi- melech (1940). This is all new for Keith Desormeaux, whose brother is one of the most successful riders in the game. He's been training for more than a quarter- century. Finally, he's made it to the top. And his horse is allowing him to feel con- fident. "What's cool for me? There's no issues with this horse," the trainer said Friday morning after Ex- aggerator returned from a gallop. "He's eating well, the energy's there, the color is good. As far as my prep- aration and the expecta- tions of what we've done through the horse, I really can't ask my horse to be do- ing any better. He doesn't seem to be showing the rig- ors of three top races in five weeks. "That's usually the num- ber one concern, right? It looks like he's thriving off of it, so that's pretty cool." The excitement level won't be close to what took place with American Phar- oah, who had become the "people's horse" as owner Ahmed Zayat and trainer Bob Baffert shared their star with the public. When he won, the grandstand shook as a packed house of 90,000 cheered him on. The crowd is unlikely to come close to that number, especially with a Saturday weather forecast calling for a 30-40 percent chance of rain with scattered thun- derstorms. A wet track would be welcomed by the favor- ite. Exaggerator thrives in the slop, romping by 6 lengths in the Santa Anita Derby and by 3 lengths in the Preakness. With an outside post, look for Kent Desormeaux to try and stay clear of trouble, check the early pace and position himself accordingly. "If I could have a dream run, he would be forwardly placed," the jockey said, "and I would be able to dreamingly decide when to pull the trigger." The field has some new faces to the Triple Crown trail, as well as some ri- vals Exaggerator has al- ready beaten. Trainer Todd Pletcher has the second and third betting choices in Stradivari (5-1), fourth in the Preakness, and Des- tin (6-1), sixth in the Derby. Gettysburg, a 30-1 long shot who just broke his maiden, is a front-running colt expected to set the early pace in a field full of horses who like to race well off the lead. Stradivari could be near the lead, too. Exaggerator has shown he's versatile, but rallying from far back seems to be his best style. Other closers in the field include Preak- ness runner-up Cherry Wine (8-1), Creator (10-1), Suddenbreakingnews (10- 1), Brody's Cause (20-1), Lani (20-1) and Trojan Na- tion (30-1).
