Main St., Suite #1, Red Bluff, CA (530) 527-7951 General Dentistry Katrina Perdue D.M.D. Renee Dustie Tomi Dr. Perdue www.redbluffyamaha.com Dear Annie: I caught my husband engaging in Internet porn activities. We had a huge fight, and he kicked me out of the house. Our 14-year-old daughter, ''Lori,'' still lives with him because he gives her all the freedom she wants. Her sisters live with me, but Lori rarely comes to visit. My daughter is a good kid, but a 14-year-old still needs a lot of guidance and sup- port. My husband says he is being supportive by allow- ing Lori to make her own decisions. Is this rational and safe? Can a parent who engages in immoral behav- ior such as porn, infidelity and lying be a good father? I want to take Lori away from him, but I am reluctant to force her. She says I have too many rules and restric- tions. I don't want to make things worse. Can you give me any sug- gestions? — Lost in Hawaii Dear Lost: Your husband is not being ''supportive.'' He is being lazy. A 14-year- old should not be making all her own decisions, and it requires a lot of parental oversight to make sure she is protected while she matures. Lori needs rules. Kids feel more secure when they understand what the boundaries are. A parent who allows a young teen to do whatever she likes is telling her he doesn't care about her welfare. You don't have to force Lori to move in with you, but you should definitely talk to a lawyer about regular visitation so she spends at least half of her time in your company. She needs at least one responsible parent in her life. Dear Annie: My 94-year-old father recently died. Because I was born fewer than 9 months after they married in 1935, he never believed I was his child. When I was 5 years old, they divorced. I saw him from time to time throughout the years. Two years ago, Dad called and asked me to take a DNA test. It turned out positive, proving I was indeed his child. His response? He said, ''I've been without kids this far and don't intend to start now.'' He walked out, and I never saw him again. My wife and I went to the church the day of his funer- al and were told by my step- mother to leave because I would disrupt the service. We left. I have three sons and three grandsons, each carrying his last name. My stepmother buried all of us that day. I don't know how to cope. Please help me. — Buried Alive in N.H. Dear N.H.: How sad that your father's misplaced bit- terness deprived both of you of a loving relationship. There's no point blaming your stepmother. While she could have been kinder, she no doubt felt she was honor- ing her husband's wishes. You have spent a lifetime being rejected by your father, only to have him die before you had time to rec- oncile. Please get some counseling. It will help you come to terms with your grief and accept that there was nothing you could have done to change the out- come. Our condolences. Dear Annie: This is to ''Ready to Quit,'' whose families tell her she's a ter- rible person: Get away from those toxic people. I lived through the same nightmare, spearheaded by a jealous mother who consid- ered me her competition. She broke up my marriage because she wanted my hus- band. My relatives believed every word she told them. I also considered suicide, but realized that would only give them the satisfaction of saying, ''See, we knew she was crazy.'' I was filled with self- loathing until I returned to school, got a degree and walked away from my tor- mentors. I discovered I'm a good person, and now I have many good friends who love me. I only regret that it took so long to escape their judg- mental comments. You hang in there and know there is nothing wrong with you. By the way, Mom chased my ex for 35 years, and then he found someone else. She did all that for nothing. — Better Without Them Annie's Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Immoral ex raising immoral daughter Annie's Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar FEATURES DEAR DR. GOTT: I would like to know the difference between heat stroke and a massive stroke leading to death. My friend was out most of the day in 85 F to 90 F heat. He wasn't sick at all. He went to bed that night and fell on the floor. He couldn't get up. About a half-hour later, he went into a coma and never came out of it. I am blaming myself for keep- ing him outside. He was having a good time, even doing the chicken dance. I am wondering if the heat had anything to do with it. He was 93. DEAR READER: The main difference between heat stroke and stroke is the heat. A typical stroke results when blood flow to the brain becomes compromised, usu- ally because of a blood clot or bleeding into the brain. A heat stroke occurs when the body is unable to cool itself properly and internal temperatures reach 104 F or higher. At this temperature, tis- sues and organs can begin to swell and may cause brain damage or even death. Stroke has warning signs, such as half the body becoming para- lyzed, slurred speech, drooping on one side of the face and more. Sometimes no signs or symptoms are present, and in others, the symptoms are mild or occur quick- ly before the person loses con- sciousness. Heat stroke, on the hand, has many symptoms. It is commonly preceded by heat cramps and heat exhaustion. These are usually characterized by fatigue, excessive sweating, muscle cramps, increased thirst, headache, dizzi- ness, nausea, lightheadedness and more. If these symptoms are ignored, the body can become dehydrated, which then results in the inability to sweat, causing the body to overheat. If your friend was feeling ill prior to collapse, he may have suf- fered a heat stroke, but you say he was in good spirits and felt nor- mal. This leads me to believe that, if he did indeed have a stroke, it was proba- bly not the result of his out- door activities. A final factor is your friend's age. At 93, our bod- ies are wearing down. Things don't always work the way they should. Per- haps he did not have a stroke at all. Often, heart attack can result from strenuous activi- ty and may not present with any symptoms. Did he have any health concerns or medical conditions that would put him at increased risk of heart attack or stroke, such as elevated cholesterol levels, fam- ily or personal history of these conditions, or hypertension? Was he on any medication? The list can go on and on, but the result is the same. Unless an autopsy was per- formed, there is no way to know why your friend passed away in the manner he did. As for you blaming yourself, this is not necessary. You are not to blame. Even in the event that your friend suffered a heat stroke, he would have had warning signs, which he chose to ignore and not seek help for. I suggest your speak with a therapist to work out your feelings. He or she can help you process what happened to allow you to better cope with the loss of your friend and conclude that what happened was not your fault.
