Quentin Bealer, 42, took the stand again as a witness for the defense in his own trial. Bealer is accused of murdering Marysa Nichols, whose body was found half a mile behind Red Bluff High School Feb. 28, 2013. Bealer recounted where he was and where he saw Marysa the day she disappeared. Bealer was shown several photos and asked to describe where he was that day by both the pros- ecution and the defense. Lucy Sousa, Nichols' maternal grandmother, also testified for the defense Monday. Sousa said her relationship with her daughter, Dianne Whit- mire, was not always pleasant but they were com- municating. Sousa said she didn't receive any news about Marysa Feb. 26, 2013, the day she went missing, but did talk to Whitmire the following day. "I spoke with Dianne that day (Feb. 27, 2013)," Sousa testified. Sousa explained she had read on Facebook that Nichols had gone missing so she called to find out what had happened. "Dianne said she dropped Marysa off at school at 10:20 a.m. Feb. 26," Sousa said. According to Sousa, Dianne said she had gone home around 2:30 p.m. to break up an argument between Nichols and her husband, Curtis Whit- mire. Dianne and Curtis had previously testified that there was no argument. During cross-examination, Sousa said she had not reported the information to police because she lives in Orange County and thought she was MURDER TRIAL Bealer recounts dayteen vanished By Heather Hoelscher hhoelscher@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Heather on Twitter RED BLUFF A 25-year-old Red Bluff man was ar- rested Saturday after calling Butte County Sher- iff's Office to report he had shot a man in self de- fence at a home in Campbellville in the mountains east of Los Mo- linos. Michael Lamberts came up with the event after do- ing research for his new wine tour business, 99 & Wine, he said. "I come from the Bay Area and we don't get ex- posure like Napa, Lodi and Sonoma do," Lam- berts said. "We have fan- tastic wineries here so I decided to start a wine service, which I'm in the process of. Through that I became friends with vari- ous wineries and came up with the idea for the festi- val. I'm very involved with the chamber so it was a natural fit. It's a way to get some exposure for Los Mo- linos besides the parade." The event proceeds will go to the chamber for scholarships, said Ray Bi- anchi, co-owner of Bian- chi Orchards with his wife, Annie. By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter CORNING Heat began to subside just as the seniors came out to take center stage one last time Fri- day at the Corning Union High School football field, where the commencement ceremony sent 171 gradu- ates off into the world to claim their future. Brady Meeds said he had mixed emotions about the experience, but is excited to be able to continue to play baseball at Butte Col- lege, where he is planning to study criminal justice. Fellow graduate Frank Garcia, decked out in a wrestler championship belt, was very excited about graduation and also plans to attend Butte, to pursue a career as a music producer, he said. Describ- ing himself as a metal head who loves rock music, he credits one of his favorite bands, Breaking Benjamin, with his career choice. Originally from the Bay Area, Garcia was diag- nosed with Aspergers in 2010 and had trouble with making friends, being bul- lied and in the classroom. It was coming to Corning where he found the sup- port he needed, he said. "Being friendly to strangers wasn't easy," Garcia said. "Academ- ics and comprehension weren't easy.
