THE PASSING PARADE The late Joe Durrer was given a reprise in the form of a celebration of his life at his father's ranch in Dairyville last Saturday evening. The intense heat of the day had dissipated and a cooling breeze from the south made for a very comfortable experience…that and the heartfelt remarks from many of the several hundred in attendance. What made this number of people a particular surprise to me was I remember Cousin Joe as quiet, reserved and not as outgoing as other members of the clan. To reiterate our relationship(and the reason for a second run in the Parade) my father's brother A. Stanley Minch and his wife Dorothy had three children; Clifford, David John and Sallie. She married Tony Durrer and they begat Joe. Joe's stepfather, Dan Dutton, acted as master of ceremonies and kept the evening moving briskly along by passing the microphone to the many who rose and gave testimony as to what a rare person and friend was Joe. With comfortable seating on the lawn of the Linda and Tony Durrer ranch, we were regaled with tales of Joe's fishing and cooking expertise. One recurring theme was his parsimonious nature when it came to parting with a buck. Mark Garstang commented that if a person asked Joe for identification, he would only extract and display his driver's license, which would prove that few ever saw the inside of Joe's wallet. In fact, when a planned weekend with a lady friend of the moment ended with their breaking up, Joe later presented her with a bill for half the cost of the weekend. I was surprised to see two prominent state legislators in attendance. One was Doug LaMalfa, a long time family friend, and the other was Jim Nielsen. As both are politicians, their presence might have been construed as campaigning, but the remarks of both suggested otherwise. The final remarks ended with Joe's mother, Sallie Dutton, who gave a fine tribute to her son who demised so early at age 50. I marveled at her composure as she recounted her life with her only son who was, by her account, a mother's dream. Many such relationships have ended with mother and son at odds, but this was not the case with Joe and Sallie, perhaps because Joe was such a happy and caring person that everyone, especially a mother, could love. The evening's testimonials conclude with a sumptuous barbeque which would have pleased Joe Durrer in every respect except one because, for once, he was not doing the cooking.
