OldTestamentprophet after prophet cites Yah- weh labeling His peo- ple Israel a stiff necked and rebel- lious people. They thun- der about how Israel will feel His rage just as will their pagan and more rapa- cious neighbors. He prom- ises those same neighbors will unwittingly carry out His plans for Israel's apos- tasy, to Him the worst re- bellion. Historically He did just that with Assyri- ans and Babylonians first and Romans Empire. This prophetic history has been fulfilled. Israel was de- stroyed and her enemies in turn decimated mille- nia ago. The New Testament paints a different portrait of Israel's future, one in complete agreement with Old Testament prophe- cies of ultimate destiny. From Isaiah and Ezekiel through Daniel, Joel, and Zechariah a resurrected Israel entering a golden age of faithful service to Yahweh and becoming a blessing to neighbors is unambiguous. In the New Testament, Paul writes three chapters of Romans about Gentile Christians needing to honor the Jew- ish vine onto which we are grafted. The Jews, he maintains, are and will al- ways be the apple of God's eye. His purposes for His people will be fulfilled; He never forsakes His own. Those who believe so- called replacement theol- ogy — the unbiblical no- tion that God has some- how rejected the Jews forever and replaced them with the Church, had best take notice. But we who embrace the truth that God will uphold and uplift His firstborn had better take notice as well. Not all the Old Testament proph- ecies regarding the Mid- dle East have yet come to pass — and I speak not solely of the coming Apoc- alypse. The Lord pulled my at- tention to Isaiah 17 just a few days back. The first six verses detail destruc- tion of the Syrian capitol Damascus and the desola- tion of Israel herself. She will be laid waste like a wheat field after the har- vest. The chapter unfolds — like so many others — with Israel's eventual re- pentance and resurrec- tion at the expense of the nations who dared attack God's own. God's Word is consistent. However, un- like the predictions con- cerning the other pagan empires, Damascus has never yet been destroyed. (Rome repented her pa- ganism.) This prophecy has not yet been fulfilled. Since a further catastro- phe in Israel's largest cit- ies blasts out of the same passage, logic dictates this too has not yet occurred. Despite the New Testa- ment promise of full re- demption for Israel there are dark days and another baptism by fire in her fu- ture. Why would this be so for the nation God loves as He loves His own beating heart? The answer is simple: Israel is and remains a stiffnecked and rebellious people, rejecting God's protection on His own terms. She is the most re- ligious nation on earth; when Friday's sundown approaches the wind- ing down of activity in preparation for the Sab- bath manifests a palpable peace, as much for those not Sabbath observant as for those who are. It is an unutterably beautiful ex- perience. But Israel is also the most secularized na- tion I have visited; enter- ing a music store my eyes were assaulted with what would be pornography back home and the sen- sual glut is everywhere. On top of that the religios- ity — much of the time — expresses the grossest le- galism. I recall the friend who spent a night in a Je- rusalem hospital following surgery; his Ultra Ortho- dox visitor refused to turn off a light in the room be- cause throwing the switch would be considered work on the Sabbath. This idol- atry of letter over Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:6) is more offensive to God than un- belief, if we listen to Jesus' — Yeshua's — own words. The Ultra Orthodox refer derisively to Yeshua as YE- SHU — a Hebrew acronym that translates roughly as May His Name Be Blotted Out Forever. There is hope inside Is- rael. On December 3, 2015, a council of orthodox rab- bis issued a statement in Jerusalem for the world to receive. They said in part, "we acknowledge that Christianity is neither an accident nor an error, but the willed divine outcome and gift to the nations. In separating Judaism and Christianity, G-D willed a separation between part- ners with significant theo- logical differences, not be- tween enemies." In agree- ing both understandings of God are essential they make a big step toward the Father we share. There is likewise a strong Messianic move- ment in Israel, offspring of America's Jesus People. Perfection is not in this community any more than any other, but it contains the seeds of redemptive repentance for the nation. That redemption lodges in acceptance of the Jew- ish Messiah Who has come and will come again — soon. In the meantime, what can we glean from the destiny of Israel for navigating our own back here in America? GODTALK Resurrecting Israel from rebellion — Part I Jim Wilson The Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff will hold its an- nual Vacation Bible School 9 a.m. to noon daily, June 27 through July 1. This year's theme is the popular "Cave Quest, Fol- lowing Jesus the Light of the World." Spelunkers age preschool through 5th will learn and experience the Bible. Verses focus on finding hope, courage, direction and love — and the power to share those strengths with others. As usual there will be lots of fun songs to sing, games to play and crafts to make. This year there will be a video segment where chil- dren see a short film about a real-life child and how that child expresses their faith. Vacation Bible School to feature spelunking The Sacred Heart Church Choir will perform a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 5 at the Church, 505 Main St. in Red Bluff. The choir will be celebrat- ing a half-century chronol- ogy of the church's musical history from the pre-Vatican II era thought the Folk Mass era to the present day.
