ByCatherineLucey The Associated Press SAN DIEGO In a full- throated general election attack, Hillary Clinton lam- basted Donald Trump's for- eign policy vision Thursday as one of war, international turmoil and economic cri- sis. She contrasted that with what she portrayed as her optimistic, inclusive and diplomatic view of the world, born from her long experience in public life. There was nothing dip- lomatic in her remarks, a clear indication of how she'll take Trump on. Elect- ing him, she said, would be "a historic mistake." During a speech in San Diego, the former secretary of state unloaded on her likely presidential election opponent, counting down reasons he is not qualified — from his aggressive Twit- ter attacks to his emotional outbursts. "He is not just unpre- pared; he is temperamen- tally unfit," she told several hundred people gathered in a ballroom. "We cannot let him roll the dice with America." She predicted dire con- sequences if he is elected, saying a Trump presidency could lead the U.S. into war abroad, spark nuclear con- flicts and ignite economic catastrophe at home. "There's no risk of people losing their lives if you blow up a golf course deal, but it doesn't work like that in world affairs," Clinton said. "The stakes in global state- craft are infinitely higher and more complex than in the world of luxury hotels. She mocked Trump's Twitter blasts and predicted he was preparing more as she spoke. As if on cue, he tweeted immediately af- ter she finished: "Bad per- formance by Crooked Hill- ary Clinton! Reading poorly from the telepromter! She doesn't even look presiden- tial!" Clinton's robust as- sault on Trump also was widely carried on televi- sion, a change for the lead- ing Democratic candidate who's frequently struggled to break through coverage of Trump. It came as she is ramping up her criticism of the pre- sumptive Republican nom- inee and trying to quell concerns within her own party that she doesn't have a plan of attack for the gen- eral election. Clinton's cam- paign wants to show she is ready to take the fight to Trump. Supporters have spent the past week assail- ing him on housing and vet- erans' issues. In Thursday's speech, she sought to prove that she is ready to rumble with the fa- mously combative Trump. She offered a number of ag- gressive new attack lines, at times baiting Trump to re- spond by calling him "thin skinned." She hit Trump for his re- ality television past, for his snarky Twitter feed, for his hotelier experience. She ran down a list of people he has insulted, in- cluding the pope. And she assailed Trump over many past statements, criticizing him for seeking to ban Muslims from enter- ing the country, for talking about leaving NATO and for suggesting Japan could one dayacquirenuclearweapons. "He has the gall to say prisoners of war like John McCain aren't heroes," Clin- ton said. "He says he has foreign policy experience because he ran the Miss Universe pageant." Emphasizing her expe- rience as first lady, senator and secretary of state, Clin- ton said she would provide the steady diplomacy the country needs. She said that unlike Trump, she knew how to negotiate complex deals, understood world af- fairs and recognized what it means to deploy Ameri- can troops. POLITICS Clinton: Trump as president would endanger America By Steve Peoples and Scott Bauer The Associated Press JANESVILLE, WIS. House Speaker Paul Ryan en- dorsed Donald Trump's bid for president on Thursday, bringing an end to the ex- traordinary public split be- tween the GOP's presump- tive White House nominee and the nation's top Repub- lican in office. "I had friends wishing I wouldn't support him. I had friends wishing I would," Ryan said in an exclusive interview with The Associ- ated Press. "I really didn't feel any pressure, other than my goal is to make sure that were unified so that we're at full strength in the fall so we can win the election." The Wisconsin Republi- can's announcement, made in a newspaper column published in his Wisconsin hometown, marks a signif- icant step for a Republican Party trying to come to- gether ahead of a general election matchup against likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. And Ryan made clear he had Clinton on his mind when he decided to join the ranks of Republicans who have slowly come around to backing Trump, the brash billionaire few expected to emerge as the party's nomi- nee when the campaign be- gan in earnest last year. "This to me is about sav- ing the country and pre- venting a third progressive, liberal term, which is what a Clinton presidency would do," Ryan said. Trump celebrated the endorsement on his favor- ite venue, Twitter. "So great to have the en- dorsement and support of Paul Ryan," Trump wrote. "We will both be working very hard to Make Amer- ica Great Again!" There are still some GOP leaders who say they won't support Trump, including 2012 Republican presiden- tial nominee Mitt Romney, who tapped Ryan as his run- ning mate four years ago. A dayearlier,Romneysignaled that he's support a possible third-party candidate in- stead of the presumptive Re- publican nominee. Ryan himself acknowl- edged that he continues to have concerns Trump's combative style, but said after a series of conversa- tions with Trump, he's con- fident he and the House Republicans he leads as speaker will be able to work with him as presi- dent on their agenda. As the GOP's so-called "Never Trump" movement struggled to identify a vi- able alternative, many be- lieved it was only a mat- ter of time before Ryan fell in line. The endorsement, he said, was not the prod- uct of any deal with the bil- lionaire developer, but a de- cision based on "an under- standing of our mutually agreed upon principles." Ryan said he specifically wanted to go over Trump's approachtoexecutivepower, judicial appointments and his position on abortion.
