ByJeffMartin and Russ Bynum The Associated Press ATLANTA Travelers who were dreading long air- port security lines ahead of the Memorial Day week- end instead reported mov- ing quickly through check- points Friday after authori- ties opened extra screening lanes and used bomb-sniff- ing dogs to give some pas- sengers a break from re- moving their shoes. "Wow. I mean, wow," said Mike Saresky, who flew into Chicago from Philadelphia, where he breezed through airport security in 12 min- utes and got to leave his shoes on. "I thought it was going to be a lot worse." The extra dogs were con- centrated at the nation's largest airports, but they were not used for all screen- ings, meaning that many travelers still had to observe the usual procedures. But as the busy summer travel season kicked off, the federal Transportation Se- curity Administration tried to offer travelers some relief after weeks of slow-moving lines blamed on an increase in the number of air travel- ers and a shortage of TSA security officers. A TSA spokesman said the extra dogs would re- main well beyond the hol- iday. At Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta, known as the world's busiest, all 16 security lanes at the main checkpoint were open Fri- day morning as a bomb- sniffing dog and its han- dler walked among wait- ing passengers. Wait times were slashed to less than 15 minutes, compared with backups of nearly an hour in recent weeks. "All the natives were tell- ing me, 'Brace yourself,'" said Carl Pluim, who ar- rived in Atlanta to fly home to Denver. "I left myself two hours before my flight, so I think I'll be OK." When she flew barely two weeks ago, LaGretta Watkin recalled security lines that were "so chaotic" that trav- elers "could barely move." "But today it's smooth sailing and refreshing," Watkin said as she started a trip from Atlanta to Jack- sonville, Florida. "And I'm loving it." The TSA began deploy- ing extra canine teams to the busiest airports months ago. While the goal was to shorten waits at larger air- ports, the reshuffling could also result in longer lines at airports that lost dog teams. The dogs "have the abil- ity to screen large groups of passengers for explosives, making the removal of shoes and laptops and such unnecessary," TSA spokes- man Mike England said. The agency has 900 dog teams nationwide, Eng- land said. He declined to say which airports they were sent to for the holiday weekend or how long they might stay. "This is not just for Me- morial Day weekend," Eng- land said. "I wouldn't ex- pect that it would go away any time soon." MEMORIAL WEEKEND Air travelers get a break from long security lines By Lisa Cornwell The Associated Press CINCINNATI Henry Heim- lich, a 96-year-old sur- geon credited with devel- oping his namesake Heim- lich maneuver, has used the emergency technique for the first time himself to save a woman choking on food at his senior liv- ing center. Heimlich said he has demonstrated the well- known maneuver many times since he developed it in the 1970s but had never had performed it on anyone who was choking — until Monday. "The whole thing was very moving to me," he said Friday. "I never thought that I would be saving someone's life by doing the Heimlich maneuver." The retired chest surgeon was in the dining room at the Deupree House in Cin- cinnati, where he lives, when an 87-year-old woman began choking Monday night. The dining room maî- tre d', Perry Gaines, told The Cincinnati Enquirer that Heimlich dislodged a piece of hamburger from the woman's airway and she quickly recovered. In a video interview provided to The Enquirer, choking victim Patty Ris said she wrote a note to Heimlich that said, "God put me in this seat next to you." The maneuver involves abdominal thrusts applied to a choking person in an effort to lift the diaphragm and force air from the lungs to dislodge any object. Heimlich told The As- sociated Press on Friday that he was having dinner when he looked over at the woman sitting next to him and could see that her face was growing pink and she was obviously choking. He said he got up behind her and began the tech- nique. "As soon as I did the Heimlich maneuver, a piece of meat with a bone in it im- mediately popped out," he said.
