Each student was presented with a plaque and pen and pencil set as a token of their accomplishment. It is always refreshing to listen to their speeches about their future career plans and the positive words they have for their teachers and parents. These are the young people in the community who always do the right thing. GRADUATION Commencement ceremonies scheduled A team of three Califor- nia State University, Chico nutrition students took home first place at the Nu- trition Bowl hosted by CSU, Northridge in April in con- junction with the Califor- nia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Annual Con- ference and Exhibition in Riverside. Graduate student An- drea Crittenden, gradu- ate student Carina Chiodo and dietetic intern Crystal Vasquez represented CSU, Chico in the competitive quiz game. "We're proud of our stu- dents' performance in this fun experience, where they were challenged with the opportunity to test their knowledge of the dietetics field," said Kathryn Silli- man, chair of the Depart- ment of Nutrition and Food Science. CSU, Chico's victory was achieved by winning the most points in individual rounds, where students were asked questions simi- lar to those on the national registration exam that is required to become a reg- istered dietician, including on the topics of food sci- ence, food service admin- istration, nutrition science and clinical nutrition. The Nutrition Bowl was sponsored by the Marilyn Magaram Center for Food Science, Nutrition and Di- etetics, and marked the re- turn of the annual event af- ter a three-year hiatus. CSU, Northridge, San Jose State University and San Fran- cisco State also competed with teams. CSU, Chico's Department of Nutrition and Food Sci- ence provides students with a broad educational back- ground in the science of food and nutrition manage- ment. Facilities include a food and sensory laboratory for courses and research in food science and nutrition. Students learn to use soft- ware programs for nutrition analyses, food cost control, and recipe and menu eval- uation. For more informa- tion, visit www.csuchico. edu/nfsc.
