Ididnotrealizethatmost of the profit made from block- buster mov- ies in Holly- wood comes out of China. Whereas, Amer- ica has 4-5 ma- jor studios producing al- most 400 mov- ies each year, China has but one 7,000 acre studio that produces over 600 features annually. A duplicate village for ev- ery era has been built in eastern China. That stu- dio produces about 30 films each and every day, many of them are now produced in English. Show business is in fact so popular there that 15 million tourists visit that back lot each year. What has already been created is a magic kingdom much bigger than what Walt Disney thought of and had built. This all started about twenty years ago when one of China's agribusiness gi- ants, also a billionaire, got the idea and started to con- struct it. Today and everyday in China, 22 new movie screens are opening. Already, many Chinese actors want a life like George Clooney and Meryl Streep have. And, as you already know, people are all the same everywhere anyway. I know my wife Roleeda and I would like to be stars. Oh well, maybe we can ac- complish that in our next life. I hear all the time that China is experiencing bad economic times, but not in their movie industry. The thing about both our movie industries is the fact that they are more recession proof than other industries. During bad times most peo- ple can still manage to catch a movie or two. We need to keep dreaming and movies can still make a profit. In February this year, the Chinese box office topped over a whopping one billion dollars for the first time from its 1.3 billion cit- izens. That level of movie go- ers has our Hollywood sali- vating. China is definitely on the move. Since I am in the be- ginning of my winter years, 77, I often tell my friends I would really enjoy return- ing to life briefly in about 50 years, just in order to see who is in charge of every- thing then. However, in half a century maybe it will wind up being a 3-way tie. Let's hope it's America, China and India, in that order. Our Hollywood is now part- nering with China's huge stu- dio, especially on blockbuster films. I remember each day my 18 years being elected to the California Assembly. For a short time during that period, I was appointed as a member of the Califor- nia Film Commission, whose job it was to study some- thing called Runaway Pro- duction. That was the phrase used to describe other states who were giving tax credits and other benefits to Holly- wood in order to get the stu- dios there to make movies in their state. I authored a proposal at that time which help the film business do what I called one- stop-shopping to get past all the regulations and laws when one decides to film anywhere. It is common knowledge that when show business comes to your town it can bring lots of jobs and economical benefits with it. Mytakeonthemovies This week's movie is "Nice Guys," starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. Those two actors are why I decided to talk a look. The film is set in Los Angeles in 1977. To be honest, it is what I call a throwaway film, but you can still have some fun watch- ing it especially on a rainy day. Concerned about Sheriff's Department Editor: I am concerned about how poorly staffed our Sheriff's De- partment has become. Even more concerning is that several attempts to fill vacant positions have resulted in no qualified applicants. Tehama County is a won- derful place to live, largely be- cause it has been relatively safe. As a community we are already seeing the changes brought about by prison re- alignment and societal changes; the repercussions of these changes are likely to be- come far more intense without qualified professionals in our Sheriff's Department. Currently our deputy sheriffs are paid more than 14 percent less than those in neighboring counties. I urge you to join me in asking our Board of Supervi- sors to take action to bring our officers' wages up so that their positions can be filled. As a community we need to stand together and support our Sheriff's Department and see that it is properly staffed, it is imperative for their safety and ours. If you share my concern, please contact your supervi- sor and let them know: Super- visor Steve Chamblin, schamb- lin@co.tehama.ca.us; Supervi- sor Candy Carlson, ccarlson@ co.tehama.ca.us; Supervi- sor Dennis Garton, dgarton@ co.tehama.ca.us; Supervi- sor Bob Williams, bwilliams@ co.tehama.ca.us and Burt Bundy , bbundy@co.tehama. ca.us. —BarbaraRamey,RedBluff Carlson gets my vote for Supervisor Editor: I have attended all the de- bates for the Supervisors in our county. They were poorly at- tended. The Grange Hall had the most attendance and lasted almost two hours. Candy Carlson and Sandy Bruce were the only ones at- tending. I have gone door to door campaigning and found most don't know who is run- ning and some are not regis- tered and don't want to. No wonder our country and county are out of control. Spending money we don't have and not balancing the budget. I wonder why the three board members voted Candy Carl- son not to advance to the sec- ond chair when it was time for all board members to move one seat forward? I guess they didn't want her to have any say in future spending or not let- ting her sit as chairman of the board the next year. It was a slick vote and the District 2 didn't like it at all. We voted her to be able to have a chance to chair the board the next year and they were afraid she would do a good job. Let's all the people in the Dis- trict 2 vote for Candy Carlson to make a change in our county. — June Cooper, Red Bluff Agencies thanked for cleanup effort Editor: On behalf of the Tehama County Fish and Game Com- mission I want to express our most sincere appreciation to all the government agencies, their employees, individuals and Green Waste of Tehama County for their contribution to our community. Government agencies include California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Bureau of Recla- mation, city of Red Bluff's Parks and Police department, Tehama County Sheriff's and Probation departments and the inmates from Cal Fire's Ishi Conserva- tion Camp. It is calculated that more than 200 cubic yards of trash of all kinds was removed, some of which you wouldn't want to come in contact with. Green Waste of Tehama donated more than $3,300 worth of their ser- vices and the Tehama County Solid Waste Management Agency donated more than $11,000 in disposal fees. Thanks to all the above and more, Dog Island Park is once again a quality outdoor recre- ation resource for our commu- nity and beyond. Opportunities for an outdoor recreational ex- perience are bountiful whether it be a family or an organiza- tion picnic or barbecue at the beautiful location of the barbe- cue pit donated to the park by the Rotary Club of Red Bluff, disc golf, fishing access, bird watching or its many other op- portunities. — Les Wolfe, Red Bluff What's the real solution to violence? Editor: Gun control, weapon control, people control. Shall we remove guns, weapons and chemically unbalanced individuals? What about swat boards, sticks and hands used to dis- cipline misbehaving children? What about improved mental health programs? How about understanding and improving chemical balance with balanced priorities? No such thing as dumb ques- tions, only dumb answers. Statesmen or politicians, leaders set example for others. Which candidates set the best example for us to follow? Espe- cially children. — Steve Kelsey, Corning Your opinions Cartoonist's take It's mildly irritating when Facebook tries to nudge me into tagging a photo of my wife's sis- ter as my wife or my son as my- self, but there are much more ominous possibilities in the world of facial recognition soft- ware. According to the Washington Post, an Israeli start-up com- pany called Faception claims to be able to take one look at a per- son's face, compare it to a data- base and deduce a whole slew of character traits, including whether the person is a poten- tial terrorist. Yes, Shakespeare's Julius Cae- sar was all "old school" when he observed "Yon Cassius has a lean and hungry look"; but ar- tificial intelligence is bringing snap judgments into the 21st century. With 80 percent accuracy, Faception's technology can purportedly identify every- thing from great poker play- ers to extroverts, pedophiles, geniuses, white collar crimi- nals, wimps who won't sue Fa- ception if they get beat up af- ter being misidentified as one of the aforementioned groups, etc. The main focus of Faception is on homeland security issues; but even there, effectiveness may be short-lived. The terror- ists may figure ways around it. I understand ISIS is flooding the market with photos of jihadists on jowl-flapping roller coaster rides and urging its scientists to finalize new real life applica- tions for advanced Wooly Willy technology. Keenly aware of ethics con- cerns, a Faception spokesman assures us that the 15 different classifiers used by the company to produce its profiles will never be made available to the general public. I have my doubts. ("The se- crets are guarded by a trusted employee — who, um, meets 14 of the 15 classifiers for being a member of WikiLeaks! Darn! Darn! Darn! Pay no attention to that massive data dump on the Internet.") Imagine the societal upheaval if such information does go pub- lic, gets exploited by unregu- lated copycats and tempts indi- viduals and institutions to abuse it. Suddenly everyone will be muttering "Maybe you can judge a book by its cover," "Better safe than sorry" and "Guilty until proven innocent." Romantic invitations will be rejected, job offers will be rescinded and adoptions will never take place. Even some- thing as simple as a payday loan will be affected. ("Why do you REALLY need this loan? According to analysis of the surveillance camera pho- tos, you probably need to es- tablish a new identity after you mass murder my helpless family. Take your business some- where else, sir! But please take a complimentary calendar, and a nail file for your 80 per- cent likelihood of having brit- tle nails.") Remember the 1980s Pan- tene "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful" ad? Soon it could be "Don't hate me because my sym- metrical follicles indicate bouts of melancholy." The medical profession will never be the same, thanks to ex- changes like the following: "The facial swelling from your allergic reaction to bee stings may never fully subside." "I want a second opinion, doc." "Okay, and you'll probably win the backgammon tourna- ment while humming a credit- able version of 'Bohemian Rhap- sody.'" I'm all for preventing another 9-11, but there's still something easily skewed and downright creepy about the services offered by Faception. I'm not sure I even want to live in a world where the inspi- rational words of Martin Lu- ther King, Jr. have devolved into "I look to a day when peo- ple will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by whether their ears hang low and wobble to and fro."
