MEMORIAL DAY Ceremonies planned in Red Bluff, Corning By Margaret Baum Daily News correspondent SACRAMENTO A Sacramento jury heard continued testimony Tuesday from the man charged with homicide in the strangling death of a 14-year-old Red Bluff girl murdered in 2013. Quentin Bealer, 42, took the stand again Tuesday as a wit- ness for the defense in his own trial. Bealer is accused of murder- ing Marysa Nichols, whose body was found half a mile behind Red Bluff High School Feb. 28, 2013. During Bealer's testimony Monday he detailed the path that he walked Feb. 26, 2013 not- ing that he did see Marysa down by the creek and he gave her a lit cigarette. Tuesday morning, Bealer told the jury that he knew more about where Marysa was found then he originally told police. Bealer said that a friend's brother was part of the search party that found the body. Ac- cording to Bealer, he was told the body was found near an area where he had used drugs that day. Bealer's attorney, Shon Northam, asked Bealer why he lied to police about the path he walked. "I lied because I wanted to put myself as far away from where she was found," he told the jury. Deputy District Attorney Donna Daly asked Bealer during cross-examination if he knew the timing of where he was from his own memory. "What have you looked at prior to testifying," Daly asked Bealer. "I've looked at every page of my discovery," Bealer said. "I listened to all the audio and watched all the video." "So you don't really know the times, you just know from review- ing the material," Daly asked. "That's right," Bealer said. Daly asked Bealer several ques- tions about previous jobs he had and the length of time he had been living with his parents prior to February 2013. Daly questioned Bealer about testimony he gave on Monday. "I never gave any testimony about where Marysa went," Bealer told the jury. TRIAL Bealerrecountsdayofmurder By Heather Hoelscher hhoelscher@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Heather on Twitter RED BLUFF The 8th annual Ronnie Lee King Memorial Ride raised nearly $3,000 Saturday for various first responder agen- cies and programs within the county with home-base at the Tehama District Fairground. The event is held in honor of the late Ronnie Lee King, son of Corey king and Ed And Shel- ley McCullough and the grand- son of Dennis and Jeannie Gar- ton. King started getting sei- zures in 2003 and died on June 27, 2008. "When Ronnie Lee was hav- ing seizures we called 911 and emergency personnel had to wait for the ambulance to have a pulse and oxygen machine," Jeanie Garton said. Today all five fire engines have the machine due in part from the proceeds from the annual fundraiser's past eight years. The ride has raised about $16,000 since it began. Some of the money raised will be given to the Tehama County Sheriff's Chaplains program, Jeannie Garton said. Nearly 40 motorcycles took part in the ride, with peo- ple coming from Concord and Woodland and cities in Nevada and Oregon. Businesses and members of the community participated in the event by making dona- tions and buying tickets for raf- fle baskets. Some donated their time to cook the pancake break- fast and have lunch ready for the riders after the 120-mile ride. Shelley McCullough said the event is to keep Ronnie Lee's memory alive. It brings out the community and gets everyone together, she said. "It is our way of remember- ing him," she said. Jeanie Garton told the story of when Dennis Garton and Ronnie Lee would ride together. The two had some favorite spots where they would go to ride and now through this event they try to incorporate those places in the memorial ride. Karen Davis, of Concord, is a long time friend of the family and has come out to support the event for the last seven years, she said. "This is such a great event," Davis said. "I come out here ev- ery year because of the people, they are like family."
