The plan was to administer local anes- thesia and drop a fibre optic line down his throat to see how serious the situa- tion might be. Christopher, normally in love with medical procedures even when uncomfortable, became skittish and refused to cooperate after the anesthetic had already been given. I asked if he would do the procedure if Daddy did it first and he thought that would be fine. There was no anesthesia for me. There was only the need of my son on the line. I smiled and gave every assurance that I was having loads of fun while they stuck that thing down my gozzle. Christopher couldn't wait for his turn – after seeing how much fun Dad was having – and everything was fine from that point on. I don't know if I would have so readily sacri- ficed my comfort for someone else's son – but I do know that the Lord Jesus sacrificed for all of our sons (and daughters) and I know that the Christian life demands that we count it a privilege to follow where Jesus leads. I know that celebration of the culture of sacrifice into which we are born as Christians is what Valentine's Day is all about, and that the authentic message of the day is to prepare our- selves for living in that culture. Valentine was a third century priest who specialized in preparing couples for marriage despite a Roman emper- or's edict that soldiers should not marry. When the emperor discovered his activities he was arrested. While in prison he fell in love with the daughter of his jailer and healed her of blindness in Jesus' name. He would not abandon his faith or his mission and was mar- tyred. He sent a last note to his love, in which he described his passion to be faithful to God even at the cost of his life, and signed it, "From your Valen- tine." The holiday is now seen as a commemoration of the power of romantic love, but it is the power and the authority of sacrifice in the Name of the Lord that gives deep meaning to both the holiday and the love of men and women for each other as that love is consummated in marriage. Jesus says that the marital union is of the stuff of creation in Mark 10:6-9. That sacrifical love becomes a model for human interaction that is best and most fully expressed – but by no means limited to – the marriage covenant. Most of us believe the lie that nature is all about survival of the fittest. In fact, God created us to be sacrificial people and all of nature was created with that economy in mind. Although we managed to distort the picture with our betrayal of God and of each other in the Garden of Eden – and we have been living out that dis- tortion ever since – nature is chock full of signs pointing to the original structure. The parents in every species of animal sacrifice their well being – and their lives when necessary – to protect their young so that the species can continue. When egg and sperm come together to begin a new human life they first give up their individuat- ed existence for the sake of the new life. And whenever our skin barrier is broken thousands of independently alive white blood cells fling them- selves at the point of infection in a sui- cidal plunge to protect their host – us. Jesus did not come into the world to make a new economy, but to fulfill and restore the one His Father intend- ed and set up from the beginning. He did it with sacrifice when He gave of His comfort to teach and to heal when it was not con- venient or easy; He did it with ultimate sacrifice when He laid down His life. As we express our love to our loved ones this day – and especially as we share with the one we love more than all others – let's remember that the feeling of love is one of God's greatest gifts. But the real- ity of love is that it is not a feeling that may lead to action; it is sacrificial activity that leads to deep and won- derful feeling. It finds its highest ful- fillment between man and wife this side of God, but the marriage covenant points to what should be the model for all of our human activity. Perhaps Paul – in Ephesians 5 – said it best when he wrote, "Submit (sacri- fice) yourselves to one another out of reverence for Christ." Jim Wilson leads the regional ministry of PrayNorthState. Presbyterian congregation welcomes dogs on Sundays LOS ANGELES — As the Pres- byterian service was about to start, one of the congregants was being disruptive, making a spectacle of himself once again on a Sunday. But that's what other members of the Los Angeles church have come to expect from Mr. Booby. At Covenant Presbyterian Church in the city's Westchester neighborhood, dogs like Mr. Booby are welcome congregants at the Sunday night services, where howl- ing and sudden bouts of scratching may interrupt prayers, and the col- lection plate holds treats for poodles and golden retrievers alike. And the Rev. Tom Eggebeen said he fully understands if some of the congre- gants need to step outside now and again. The idea behind the service, Eggebeen said, was to make it more comfortable for people to attend the church, which has 120 members, discounting up to a dozen dogs that generally attend services. Cats and other animals are not permitted, perhaps out of a belief that of God's many creatures, dogs probably need more ministering. "The heart of the whole thing has been to provide a worship service for the entire family, including the four-footed friends. ... Their pets are very, very important to them and virtually comprise a member of family," he said. "I wouldn't be in the pulpit on Sunday mornings and say, 'Leave your children home.'" More than a gimmick or an effort to build attendance, the dog services are part of a growing movement by churches to recognize the emotional bond between humans and their pets. Animal blessings, memorial ser- vices and grief counseling for the loss of a pet are increasingly com- mon in many denominations. Covenant is not alone in allow- ing dogs in church. Underwood Hills Presbyterian Church in Omaha has been holding its Paws for Prayers service since December 2008, but it is ending the program.
