Smith '14 Mu DKE Alumnus Bill Brown '70 Pays It Forward B efore Bill Brown '70 set foot on Colgate University's campus, he knew he would be a DKE. Both his father and grandfather before him were members (Mu and Iota alumni, respectively), so it was almost predetermined that Bill would follow in their footsteps. "I was raised thinking Delta Kappa Epsilon was the only Fraternity," Bill said. "The others were just clubs." Bill graduated from Colgate with a degree in English. His successful professional career took off as the result of an interaction between him and the father of another DKE. "Craig Warnick '71 was a brother, and his father, Buck, (a Colgate graduate also, well-known music conductor and composer, and music director at Young & Rubicam) visited the house one weekend and we hit it off. I remember him playing the piano and all of us standing around singing Cole Porter songs. He helped arrange my first interview at Young & Rubicam in New York, which led to a job there for many years." Some time later, Bill left Y&R and opened his own advertising agency in New York. He is now semi-retired, and consults for The Yale School of Music. "DKE played a big role in my professional life. Without the Fraternity, I would have had a rough time getting started, so for that I am grateful." When it came time for Mu of DKE to raise money for the capital campaign, Bill felt it was only right to give back. His need to pay it forward for future generations of brothers was a main factor in his contribution. "My experience did so much in shaping my career and personal life, and I want to see that carried on for other young men. Also, I want our successful fundraising efforts to make the school administration think twice about alienating us. While we're proud of our school, they don't seem to value the Fraternity experience as an aspect of personal growth. "DKE has done a lot for me over the years and I owe a great deal for the friends and opportunities I have received through my membership. Mu of DKE housed a diverse group of outstanding men, including a world-class hockey player (John Madia '71), a brilliant piano player (Bucky Brougham '70), a leader in popular culture (Bill Wood '70), and a legendary raconteur (Tim Clifford '70). I am lucky to have spent so much time with them as an undergraduate and to still call them friends today." Bill and his wife, Jennie, live in Norfolk, Connecticut. Bill is a big music fan, and also spends his time golfing, shooting, and engaging in pro bono projects in his community. You can contact Bill at bgrahambrown@gmail.com.
