RED BLUFF FIRE SCHOLARSHIP Red Bluff residents Am- ber Wilson, 33, and Eliza- beth Senzell, 38, returned to college to earn their bachelor's degrees so they could do more with their lives. "I was working full time at a job that I didn't love and overall was dissatis- fied with my life because I wasn't following my pas- sion," Wilson said. "I always knew that I wanted to go to college. I felt that the only way to feel truly fulfilled was to pursue a higher ed- ucation." In addition to pursuing her dreams, Senzell said she wanted to set a positive ex- ample for her four children. "I now have so much hope for the future; and I know that I will have the life I always wanted," Sen- zell said. "I will now be able to pursue a career that is meaningful to me rather than just another customer service or retail position. I know that my children will pursue a higher education, which will allow them to live the life they will enjoy and thrive in." On April 30, Wilson and Senzell graduated from Simpson University's School of Adult Studies — ASPIRE degree-comple- tion program — both with a BA in psychology. They were both inducted into Al- pha Sigma Lambda, a na- tional honor society for con- tinuing education students who maintain at least a 3.8 grade-point average. Wilson and Senzell were part of the same 16-month- long online degree program. They stayed connected with professors and classmates using Skype and Moodle, Simpson's online learning management system. In addition to psychology, the ASPIRE program offers an online BA in organizational leadership. Although they both earned a psychology degree, Wilson and Senzell are tak- ing different career paths. In August, Wilson plans to earn her master's in coun- seling psychology through Simpson's School of Gradu- ate and Professional Stud- ies. Senzell will be purs- ing her master's in edu- cation and teaching cre- dential through Simpson's School of Education in or- der to become an elemen- tary school teacher and eventually a school admin- istrator. This year, $549,450 has been awarded to 209 stu- dents as they attend col- leges, universities and trade schools during the 2016- 2017 school year. Qualified recipients are eligible for the schol- arship for four years and are sometimes granted a fifth year based on their school and their degree program. "We believe that by help- ing these outstanding young people pursue their dreams and become tomor- row's leaders, we are invest- ing in the future. Our fam- ily is very proud of this program," said Carolyn Emmerson Dietz, founda- tion president. SIERRA PACIFIC Scholarships awarded to 209 students The Red Bluff Campus of the College of Medical Arts recently announced the graduation of its first class of Nursing Assis- tants, which will take place at 2 p.m. Wednes- day, May 25 at Brentwood Skilled Nursing & Rehab, 1795 Walnut St. in Red Bluff. Ten students will gradu- ate at this ceremony. Grad- uates will take the State Certification Exam in early June, and when they pass they will become Cer- tified Nursing Assistants. CNAs typically work in skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies and assisted living facilities; CNA is a common start- ing point from which peo- ple advance into licensed nursing or other health-re- lated careers. The Red Bluff Campus is the result of an inno- vative private and public collaboration designed to meet a critical shortage of CNAs in the North State region. Key partners in- clude California Heri- tage YouthBuild Acad- emy, Brentwood Skilled Nursing & Rehab and Red Bluff Health Care Center, as well as the Te- hama County Department of Social Services and the Job Training Center of Te- hama County.
